That's why I don't consult DFD before making car purchases.

I was just somewhat surprised to see the universal GTI hate even though that’s how we all :dock: ed and IMO it’s the best GTI to date.

:wrong: indeed

They drive fine but the tech sucks, the safety nannies are excessive and the MK7 still looks better.

I would buy this any day over a new MK8.

Just add in some new wheels to the purchase price and I'm good with it.

Indeed. Putting money where my mouth is, we bought a 13k mile 2022 Atlas instead of buying a new one. The tech in new VWs is trash.

I'd say drive one!

National has them in their fleet and I keep missing my opportunity to get one as a rental, but hopefully I'll get a week long test soon.

FWIW I am one of the main talk outters here but I still think GTIs are good cars. It's fun, quick, comfortable, semi-luxe, decent looking. It's a solid choice, just like sort of boring in the context of a search conversation that included M2/3, 911, etc. when it started.

I mean, everyone here owned these when we were 22-26, it feels like the world has moved on but it doesn't have to. I drive a much MORE childish car now.

To put it simply, I don't think a GTI sucks, I just don't think you'll be very into it for long. That immediate $7K bath is pretty expensive when you're dumping after 5K miles.

I also bet the tech is just fine. I've rented a couple Mercs fairly recently and they all have this capacitive touch shit on the steering wheel for a bunch of controls and it's fine.

To be fair I don’t see a 7month pump and dump… and to be real here my last purchased car the taco lasted 2.5 years … the leases are another story …

Of course I went down the pyramid when faced with the reality that I may not be ready to park 70-160k in the garage and not use it. I kind of want to use this thing

Drive it and see what you think. I will also try to get into one as a rental. Unfortunately I think my next trip I will be relegated to an SUV due to needing to move some huge pelican cases of gear.

GTI is fun on the daily.
It's kinda NFG
You're going to lose on 99.9% of the vehicles you buy.

In my spare time, I’ve been coming up with obituaries for people. Here is one for you Max:

RIP Max DFD (19-something - 2055)

The world mourns the tragic loss (or maybe not?) of DFD Max, who has finally made a decision—though, ironically, not one he had much say in. After years of painstakingly debating which car to buy next, and whether to turn left or right at that intersection, fate has stepped in to make the ultimate choice for him.

DFD Max was a man of many passions, but none greater than his love for cars. Unfortunately, that love often translated into endless hours of research, test drives, and price comparisons, only to ultimately keep driving his old, “perfectly fine” EV sedan. Car dealerships across the city will now see a drastic dip in foot traffic, as their most indecisive visitor is no longer around to “think about it and come back next week.”

He leaves behind a trail of abandoned online shopping carts, half-finished projects, and friends who are still waiting for him to decide what car to buy.

Services will be held sometime next week… or maybe the week after. We’ll let you know once we figure it out. In lieu of flowers, please send a strongly worded message encouraging him to finally commit—to anything.

His last words were fuck Toyota and I should have gotten a 911.

Rest easy, DFD Max. Or don’t. Up to you.
