Sleeper option (pricey but maybe there's cheaper ones out there)

PHEV Q5 has 20mi of EV range

I thought the tuning was good enough that I didn't even know until I noticed it only had 7 gears. I think the BMW has a larger rear seat, but the options were still mostly a la carte so you can find some weird cars that are missing things you'd think are no brainers. If prices are similar I wouldn't look at the traditional sedans unless you don't like the lift back looks.
Yeah saw that with the BMW, a few extra inches. I mostly want my car to be a relaxing zen type experience. Hybrids are good at that. I thought the Volvo would be. And really it comes close enough on the drive. It’s just way too tight for me.

Of course there’s the Lexus ES hybrid but I can’t do that damn touch pad infotainment from 1995.

I forgot the Q5 is cheap as shit used. The PHEV of it would be out. I’ve heard too many horror stories of them. A friend bought a Q5 2.0T grandma spec last year. I could ask him how he likes it and about MPGs.

My late brother's S5 started spewing oil from plastic parts in the engine bay. All fixed now, but it was not cheap.

The turbo 6 cyl motor is a bit of a mess maintenance wise. Same motor in the macan I think and it’s a basket case there too.

The 4 cyl is a much simpler animal. And I think it’s dual injection now so it shouldn’t have issues with carbon buildup.

But I think the bimmer edges it out on reliability.

I vote for A5 sportback or a 430i grancoupe
I think the A5 looks good but price will be the driver here.

Anyone know about reliability / pain in the ass-ness of the A4/A5 vs 330i with the B48? I know the Audis use the DSG trans which is… a mixed bag for a daily runabout with expensive service costs. I think the ZF8 has a leg up there.
So I’ve rented a handful of A4s and the driving experience is, IMO nice. They feel very fast and the tranny sporty without being annoying. I recall I got a bright blue one in TX and sat in Austin traffic, which is rough, with no complaints on rough starts and such. I think it’s improved since the MK6 days and not a reason to avoid.

I imagine all of these cars are pretty good up to at least 120k miles. Breh and I’s Beemahs were both dead reliable. My Jeep has the same 2.0t 8 speed combo as the Alfa, we’re at 53k miles or so since May 2020 with nothing but oil changes on the power train, although I need to get my ass in gear and get the tranny fluid changed :hue: I drove it a couple hundred miles yesterday and it’s flawless.

I’d probably skip the Alfa sadly. It looks the best and is probably the most fun to drive but the backseat is tiny and the one I rented had some issues at 20k miles - broken cruise control, wipers would turn off in the middle of the windshield with start/stop, just little things that seemed kind of shitty. The interior of the Alfa also feels 10 years older. I don’t really consider that bad, but worth noting.

I’m with Cale, the lift backs are cool, if they don’t command a price premium, probably worth a look.

I’d highly endorse a 330. I dumped mine because it doesn’t offer the driving experience I enjoy, but I’m a fucking weirdo who wants to drive a dumb, juvenile sports car all the time, pretty much no one here is with me on that. Otherwise I think that car was just the best bang for buck - fairly fun, looks great, amazing seats, luxo features if you get the right one, quick, fuel efficient all for like $25k for a pretty nice example.

I think the B48 would be more than adequate for me, but yeah that six slaps.

Yeah the Alfa is one of those cars that I want, but it would be a bad decision to own. Like I don’t imagine relaxing much while driving it. With a harder suspension and darty steering. It’s the STI problem all over again but with a softer edge.

I have no time for fun cars and I honestly don’t want one. I just wanna chill, man.

Not sure which bummer you looking at. The b58 is the gospel on their best new engine. Performance and reliability are top.

S55 is mostly reliable for new M. I doubt you shopping M cars tho.

The wife b48 has done well. The coolant lines all start to fail at 5 years. Plastic on engine is shit. One required manifold be removed. The b48 moved into the G chassis from the F. I've heard mixed back on the n20s especially the lower tier cars built in mexico.

B48 was the motor I was referring to. The N20 overall seems like an improvement over the older inline 6’s. And the B48 is a further improvement over the N20. To the point that they seem to have moved past the old theory that BMWs are not very reliable.

I think their engines are pretty darn solid. You’re right that the B48 is plenty. My N20 car was pretty quick stock and quite powerful with tune. Just one of those things where I coveted the :dedong: a bit.

Have you driven a G chassis 3 series? Curious how they handle potholes and torn up roads. My in laws i3 feels like a pile of shit because it rides so hard and can’t handle potholes at all. There’s so much road construction in my area.

I rented a G series 330e. I drove on some rough roads in NWA/SW Missouri and it was good. Granted the plug in weighs more but I think it still had 19" wheels or something.

My i4 had the best ride quality of any sedan I have been in. But I specifically wanted the 18” wheels. It rode significantly better than my IX on 21”s

i have. they are pretty good. Still similar to the F chassis. I dont like the interior design tho. for the m4 money I could have had a nice spec G m340i with the B48.

Alas, I chose the complexities of an older car with the PRHT.

The pre facelift G is close enough to the F30 that I don't mind it, but the LCI is no bueno to me.

Might take Wednesday off to go look at stuff. Our new HVAC system installation starts then, I'll need to take the morning off anyway so might as well take the whole day I guess? TBD.

I really am bummed about that Volvo, dudes. Price was right, year was right, mileage was solid, good service history. Drove pretty good overall and was a decently relaxing place to be. Plus, wagon is cool. If I'm getting a car that isn't going to carry all the family anyway then the fact that it can't really carry the whole fam.... well its no longer a reason not to get it. The front seat headroom can be remedied somewhat by lowering the seat more. The hatch space in it is at least as much as a 3 series sedan's trunk. Maybe not quite a 4 series GC's hatch. But the shaking brakes and the mismatched SUV tires....

The other thing is. We're having a lot of problems with the toddler hurting the dog. So.... trying to decide if rehoming the dog is what needs to happen for her happiness. So. Big feels. Too much shit changing in my life right now.

That's really alot of shit going on at once. Hopefully your local CarMax is well stocked that's usually the best place to check out most of not all the possible options. A 2018 330i Touring would be tits but they're tough to find.

Diesel wagon as well.

That GT is one ugly bmw. The second, nah, diesel is even more expensive than premium anymore. You gotta remember I don’t really care too much about how it drives as long as it’s easy to own and dependable.

The VAG V6's (current and last gen) just bought me a Miata. They shit through water pumps, and timing covers leak like crazy. I wouldn't own without a GOOD warranty.

Yeah.

Toddler abusing the animals. He hit the poor dog yesterday and Josie just laid down on her side in the middle of the room. He hit her so hard he started to scream because he hurt his hand. The dog did literally nothing to him, she was standing out of the way and he walked past, turned, walked back to her, and hit her. I had the baby on the changing table and couldn’t stop him.

Then our AC system tomorrow. Have to vacate the house for 3 fucking days while they dick with it and rip walls apart. It’ll take even more time to patch the holes they make. I was supposed to take a half day tomorrow but we have this all hands meeting that I must attend for reasons. So idk what the hell im going to do with that.

This car bullshit. And new job starting sometime. June 24 I think. I’m half tempted to call the hiring manager and say I have way too much shit going on and can’t do this. Because the new job will start at 6am, I won’t be able to help Lisa in the mornings. So she’s on her own with baby, toddler, and dog and trying to keep the toddler from getting violent.

wtf

This is all why I want noting to do with a needy vehicle.
