The X3 has an aluminum oil pan with a traditional drain plug too.
It's the same one that the AWD version has, it's got the hole for the driveshaft in it and everything. .
Makes oil changes even simpler although I had no issues with the plastic one on the 328i

But underneath they are METAL. Plastic coating sure makes sense from a corrosion standpoint. In any event, Brandon's experience and friend of mine with a 2008 W211 MB Pano are basically the same.....plastic parts, expensive reconstruction.
