I know I’m misremembering what the guy at the shop said, but one of the little slide rails in the assembly itself broke. It’s “closed” now, but can’t seat all the way because of that broken part, so the rear passenger side is popped up a little bit.

That’s right, didn’t remember the exact situation other than the plastic cap. Honestly a very easy car for erl changes, no complaints.
The X3 has an aluminum oil pan with a traditional drain plug too.
It's the same one that the AWD version has, it's got the hole for the driveshaft in it and everything. .

Makes oil changes even simpler although I had no issues with the plastic one on the 328i
