I would think the larger floor space would be better suited to kids stuff rather than having to stack it all, like a wagon vs a hatch but it is a very big car.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 1:56 pmThought about this but something like a GTI is better for my use case I think. That hatch is more of a trunk with a lift back. Same as the current civic hatch.CaleDeRoo wrote: ↑Mon Jun 10, 2024 8:37 pm https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inventory ... NE/DEFAULT
300hp, AWD, liftback, big ass back seat
But I really don’t want a GTI. In that case from VW honestly the Tiguan is more interesting to me because it’s so much less stressful to drive a CUV. But then the fucking dog can’t get in it again.
Been trying to identify what we want it to do has been difficult. Do we need it to hold the two kids or not? 1 kid and a dog? The whole fam plus dog or not?
The CRV does mostly ok with whole fam plus dog but there’s no luggage room then. V60 is marginally better maybe. She doesn’t want a big vehicle.

You had an outback? Onyx trim?
I’m reading a lot about complaints with the screen and super annoying driver aids. I think the onyx doesn’t have the driver monitoring camera so maybe it’s not as bad in that trim. But limited and touring seem awful.

Yeah a sedan trunk is good for hauling random loose stuff but we would like a hatch for the dog. Hatches like the Mazda 3 and civic are pretty useless though because of their angled rear windows, it’s not a box shape and therefore she can’t sit up in the back. Where an outback or the Volvo wagon she can.CaleDeRoo wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 6:52 pmI would think the larger floor space would be better suited to kids stuff rather than having to stack it all, like a wagon vs a hatch but it is a very big car.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 1:56 pm

Yeah if a sedan was in the cards I’d probably just go with a Camry hybrid.

I had a 2020 Limited XT. Step up from the Onyx technically. Basically all the same, but I had a moonroof, leather seats, and extendable thigh support for just slightly more. Onyx does look a lot better though. The Wilderness is interesting. It's got more ground clearance, floatier ride. I liked the one I test drove, but it came out a few years after I got my Outback.
Onyx doesn't have the driver monitoring. If you do get a car with it though, you can just pull the panel and unplug it. I did that, and then eventually got the trim piece without the camera for like $20 and just put that in place instead.
Also, the start/stop on these is absolutely miserable. Boxer 4 engines are not the smoothest to start up. They shake the car a bit side to side. There's an adapter you can get to plug into the car that causes it to "latch" and not reset after every drive. Just install one of those, turn it off once, and never think of it again.
The turbo is relatively quick for what it is. Honestly though, for this type of vehicle, I probably would have considered the non-turbo if I had to do it all over again. How much are you really gunning a daily driven Outback? The turbo doesn't transform the car isn't some sort of Group B monster.

The people with the full turtle spec seem to like the cars a lot more than the turbo owners, from my research. I don’t think I can live with that.MrH42 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 1:12 pm

I’d probably try and make sure the warranty is longer than 1 year … they claim 5 years from in service and it’s probably 4 years old alreadyJohnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:04 pm https://www.stillmanvolvocars.com/certi ... 08d5bb.htm

Yeah that’s a question for sure. Although it seems the T5 Volvos are decently reliable and all the issues stem from the more complex T6 (supercharged+turbocharged) or T8 (super + turbo + PHEV) motors.max225 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:33 pmI’d probably try and make sure the warranty is longer than 1 year … they claim 5 years from in service and it’s probably 4 years old alreadyJohnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:04 pm https://www.stillmanvolvocars.com/certi ... 08d5bb.htm

With an aside that they eat stock brake pads. Which appears to be curable with aftermarket rotors and pads which is easy enough to do over a weekend.

Is that T5 or T4? This seems to be a 4 banger. t5=4 banger even though in the past it was that semi iconic 5 cyl turboJohnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 2:00 pmYeah that’s a question for sure. No I was fried yesterday and the last thing I wanted was to deal with a dealer. Went for a bike ride instead and made some new friends.max225 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 9:32 pmDid you see?Johnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:04 pm https://www.stillmanvolvocars.com/certi ... 08d5bb.htm

I also am a little overwhelmed with costs at the moment so it’s a mental block. But $25-35k needed for HVAC repairs, $4500 for brick pointing, 2k school bill for the kid, and this at 34k. It’s just a lot for me at $70k of cash outlay needed pretty soonly.
