heh, go read my HOA experience again, and why when i moved i told my agent that if he showed me a house with an HOA (that I didn't suggest) he was fired. I also traded HOA for old house problems in old hood with no hoa. Overall its a tradeoff i'd make every time again.

Yeah I can’t imagine living somewhere with an HOA. Fuck you, I’m not paying additional money to live somewhere and have rules thrown at me. I get the appeal of having another entity to enforce certain standards for upkeep and appearance, but that’s not worth spending money on to me. I’ll just call the local code enforcement number and have them issue citations if my neighbors’ shit is too egregious.

Speed limits and speed bumps keep the douchebaggery down. 5 of my neighbors have my six every time I leave town. Pick up the mail, take out my garbage, etc, yet are not intrusive, and I return the favor. Would not move anywhere else in the desert because of that overall situ.

$180/month isn’t terrible for all of that I suppose. All the ones I’d heard of in San Diego were in the $250-500/mo range and didn’t come with the guarded gate.

An exception doesn’t make the rule. I’d argue plenty of HOA’s are exactly like yours. But there are others that have way too much and provide either too little in return or it comes with equal drama.
You are right that it gets worse the more you slide it toward increased cost/wealth. That’s because those HOA’s are run by stay at home spouses with nothing else to live for while their partners are out making millions and having affairs.

Your trophy wife at home scenario sounds fun, but it's really just two rich old wrinkled bastards who have told other people what to do for far too long who come at you in pairs. 85yo Karen left us a voicemail yesterday saying she was happy we changed our mind and are putting new fencing along our shared property line (is we get final approval next month). So glad she's happy.
