996 Targa is my "dream attainable" sports car.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 1:42 pmIt's still too rare/expensive for me but I think the 996 targa might be as close as it gets to the perfect reasonably attainable car.Apex wrote:

Add in the IMS bearing issue and I don’t foresee those values jumping up.

I like the 996 but I feel like dollar for dollar, you can get a better Boxster. I might be
as I don't look at Porsches much. I came close with the Cayman search a few years ago but ended up being too
to buy a car with such high maintenance risks.

Boxster is the best value for sure as long as you don't mind riding in a tent.D Griff wrote:I like the 996 but I feel like dollar for dollar, you can get a better Boxster. I might beas I don't look at Porsches much. I came close with the Cayman search a few years ago but ended up being too

Biggest thing to me is extra storage and livability. 911's are indeed slightly larger inside for the driver, and I find them more comfortable as a result.
But dollar for dollar, a Boxster is probably a better performance value.

I haven't driven a Boxster in a while, but the last time I did I was surprised by how quiet the tent top was. Could be fine. I suspect that I'd take issue with the visibility and lack of hatch more so than the noise, but I've never driven one.Detroit wrote:I haven't driven a Boxster in a while, but the last time I did I was surprised by how quiet the tent top was. Cramped, for sure. That's what turns me off from them the most.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 2:02 pmCould be fine. In some ways my MR2 was a better version of a boxster, at least if being used as a 2nd car. That thing was a hoot.

What they shit...they made
JCW Countrymans? I had no idea.

Yeah, I enjoy tents... but a 911 is definitely more usable. The back seat is a nice shelf for shit. Honestly, Caymans are pretty usable as well, the frunk/hatch are both decent. I think 996 are actually cheaper than any Caymans though, so I'd probably choose that given they both share the IMS Achilles heel.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 2:04 pmCramped, for sure. I guess my thought is that if you can afford say a 2012 Boxster or a 2002 911 for the same money, routinely commuting 2.5 hours each way sounds more relaxed/reasonable in a newer car. All of that said, I am driving my 17 year old GM POS to Connecticut in 1.5 weeks, so fuck it.

Yep you could get AWD+6MT in a few of them for a bit, until they got smart and eliminated that option because no one wants it.Detroit wrote:https://www.motorcitymini.com/used/MINI ... f71894.htm

I'm still liking the idea of a sub-$10k ABARF honestly.

And it's really not a POS, they seem to be quite reliable, and while an inferior interior, the ragged out ones I've seen at work still seem to be in pretty decent shape...and those things ARE NOT treated gently.
A GTI is nicer, but not as fun and more expensive.

Well $20k max, but cheaper the better, honestly. If this became reality, I'd probably be a bit more focused on $10k and under, unless something really

I also DO NOT fit in any Miata. Not happening. I'd FR-Z way before I Miata'd.
