I live behind a gate ... not overly worried about that aspect.

Oldcar shit is real scary, it’s as old as the crown Vic and that I stopped trusting that car about 5 years ago... granted the crown Vic has 3x the miles but it also had all maintenance done by me on time etc. And as you mentioned shit just breaks, I can wrench on most things. But having it be a constant nag would become annoying.

As with the crown Vic ... parts are dirt cheap though. My buddy was telling me it was only getting around 12 mpg though.... which is troubling ... I’m assuming taking the roof rack off and putting normal tires on it would make it more livable .... that’s not sustainable in Cali
Tires are likely destroying the MPG. The four-oh was never fuel efficient in any aspect of the term. It could need a tune up, spark plugs, O2 sensors, etc.
It’s running 32” highway tires. The roof rack with spare on top isn’t doing the mpgs any favors.

I wouldn’t count on an xj seeing higher than maybe 15mpg.

cruising the high schools for chics that probably bought it 4th hand with a salvage title.

Yep 15/17 was my best guess in normal trim. Considering what I’d want to use this thing for, I don’t need mud tires or anything of said nature. Soft roading mostly.

Well the tires are causing the speedo to be off by 10% I’m assuming the rack is another 10%. Thing runs like a champ as I mentioned it’s well maintained it doesn’t need anything at the moment. It doesn’t even leak oil which is madness on an xj

Buy it then. You can always re-sell it for the exact same you paid for it if it turns out to be something you're not crazy about. You won't lose anything on it.

Consideration is strong ... I’d just have to figure out a tire and wheel combo that works ... for a 2” lift it has currently installed. OME is quality stuff ... I also dig the bumpers...
I’d go -2” on the tires to 30” and -1/2 “ on the wheels I am not sure if those rubis are 16 or 17” 15”s work fine.

30 or 31s on some 15’s would be a good setup with the OME suspension.
Those rubi wheels are 17s if they’re factory wheels.

Those are OG alloys from an earlier XJ. You could punt them black. IDK that was literally 20 seconds of looking. Jeep people sell perfectly good parts for dirt cheap.

Oh she’ll hate it for sure. But this is something to take the snow/occasional road trips etc. not expecting her to love it. That or 60k in cash for a jeep.

I decided I’ll pay off the house in full so that I don’t pay the lame 3% interest. Yes it’s next to nothing but I pulled a bit of money out of the market (foolishly) it seems as it would have made me a JLUR in the last 5 months. :disgust: but ww3 around the corner so who knows

So I’m starting to lean against it... too much to go wrong... no power anything ... too expensive ... my buddy will likely want 7k for it... it is worth 5k to me tops considering I’ll have to pour some money and work into it. There are some local ones for sale closer to what I want for that price

Tacoma, Jeep, Tacoma, 4Runner, Jeep, 4Runner.

Everything else is a crapshoot.
It sort of depends “when” you buy and a few other things. Option less wranglers are the way to go when new. The rest would have to be bought used at the end of their life which is :disgust:

Nah, buy a decently optioned 1-2 year old Wrongler and NFG for a year or two. Like I did.

I'll probably lose my ass on the Trailcock, but whatever. Hopefully I can make it to 24-36 months of ownershit with it.
They don’t exist out here. I can usually get new for less
Than 1/2 year old used.

I think the Jeep is pretty rad... I don’t know about $7k though, that’s what these seem to be “worth” in the market, at least based on listings, but kind of pricey for a 21 year old basic vehicle. I rented a JK manual two door this weekend and fell in love... but same issues, is either :troywax: for new or forget about it... used Jeeps are just insane money.

Have you driven a Boxster or Cayman? For your sports car desires, they’re pretty kick ass. I covet a Lotus Evora as well.

986 Cayman S manual, I loved it, it was 35k at the local :dillerman: with 8890 miles on it. But I didn't trust the engine... so I ended up with the 370z.

Dude try out a :manuel: JL it is so much better than a JK. Great vehicle to be honest. And yea... same issue roll up windows or 60k. :disgust:

Yea, this is a clean non fucked up one which is nearly impossible to find... also 98/99 are the best years... newer gen with no head issues.

What bothers me about this particular one it's done ALMOST right, but I would immediately need to spend money on it. The wheels/tires combo is frigging :disgust: on this thing, that's another $800 down the drain. And likely some odds and ends here and there to bring it up to spec (a fluid here and there).

If it was turn key at 7k i'd do it... but it's sort of lacking. My dude wanted to put it on a 4.5" long arm kit with 33's and all kinds of other shit, but the total came out to be 14k so he decided to :nope: I'll see if he will move on the price, but overall i am sort of hesitant... (he got it for 5k+1k shipping+ he spent some other minor money to update headlights etc)

Well... I don’t think any sub $10-12k car is really turn key other than a Corolla or something like that. I’d say buying something that’s a known entity with maintenance history you’ve seen first hand is worth a lot... the question is, do you really want to drive/own this vehicle. Unless you just want an old car, a poverty spec JL new for similar ownershit costs seems way better.

New jl will cost me 3-6k in taxes and fees vs $250-500 and not like JLs don’t depreciate ...

I don’t see any of it as super long term either way. The mini is staying for sure. I really like it for fun driving. But it’s useless for long trips etc as it’s semi uncomfortable etc and doesn’t have awd for the winters here. I’m faced with looking at the weather forecast like a moron right now because I want to hit the mountains but don’t want it deal with chains.

Yo, so I'll try to post up in here vs polluting general car chat...

Any other ideas on a ruggedy off road vehicle.
Preference:
1. Simple
2. under 20k
3. under 15 years old, preferably 10
4. under 130k miles
5. 4x4
6. preferably "unique"

I caught myself thinking about a stripped out Cross Tranny with a steek again. But that seems very boring for now.

You think the first gen Lexus GX470 is a mom mobile IIRC, but if you're back at looking at Cross Tranny's stop right there, get a rig with a V8, luxo amenities, REAL 4wd with a 4 Low transfer case, drives nice on the highway.

And for the love of Jesus, Mary and all the Saints, STOP talking about the Cross-Tranny as if it is anything other than a seppuku accelerant.
