A dollar per drink is pretty standard out here at bars.D Griff wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 4:23 pmYeah this aggravates me... It always seems like they're trying to guilt you into it. I occasionally do a buck or two, sometimes not. The other that is a little annoying is a beer at a bar. You pull a handle and hand me a beer, that's not really worth 20% of $6. I usually do a buck for every two beers or something.wap wrote:
I don't, either. That has only become a thing pretty recently, iirc. That's like tipping at a fast food joint. You take my order then hand me my bag of food. What service is performed that earned a tip? Besides, unlike fast food employees, waiters are paid below minimum wage and NEED tips to make a living.

Weird. I guess nobody ever told my parents or the wife's parents, since it's impolite to discuss money.wap wrote:I'd have to say around 20-30 years ago? Maybe longer. Until this was discussed on DFD one time before, I had never heard of tipping anything but 15%. My wife and I both grew up this way. When did 20% become the expectation?
I do remember 15% being the norm when I was a kid
Either that or the DFD average is NOT anywhere near the real average, that seems more likely...

Maybe, but we're spread out all over the country and most of us are saying the same thing.troyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 5:51 pmWeird. I guess nobody ever told my parents or the wife's parents, since it's impolite to discuss money.wap wrote:

We’re usually around 20%. Nice and easy math, take the first number of the total and double it. Better or worse service will dictate any rounding up or down that needs to happen.

Not a bad idea, but I rarely stay at a bar for more than one or two drinks. We bounce around a lot when we do go out.[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:33 pmI usually give $5 for the first drink for good service then a buck for each after.

I tip 20% as my standard. Rarely will it be lower. Often it can be higher.wap wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 2:57 pm
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/millenni ... 22248.html
The millennial generation, those ages 18 to 37, are cheap when it comes to tipping restaurant servers, according to a new surveyed released by CreditCards.com of 1,000 participants.
When dining out, 10% of millennials said they typically leave no tip for their server, compared to just 3% of respondents who are older.According to the survey, the median tip a millennial leaves their server is 15%, which is less than the overall median of 18%.

If im at a busy bar I will start with a $5 tip to get their attention. The rest of the night I will have great service and not have to sit in the line. Extra credit if you memorize my drink within two drinks.D Griff wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 4:23 pmYeah this aggravates me... It always seems like they're trying to guilt you into it. I recall my mother using 15% from time to time. But she would vary all the time.troyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Jun 18, 2018 5:51 pmWeird. I guess nobody ever told my parents or the wife's parents, since it's impolite to discuss money.wap wrote:
