It took 5 months.

5 months.

I bought another Miata. The N is still here, this is just car #2 at long last.

Purchased today.

Overview:

‘99 (NB1), 5 speed, white, 177k miles, not pretty but not fucked with, $2600 :megusta:

The rest is :hibachi:

For now, I must go shopping. Details to follow.

$2600 seems very reasonable for that

It is! Reason why it’s cheap is that it blew its head gasket a few hundred miles ago. Prev owner had it replaced, head resurfaced, and got a new water pump immediately by a reputable miata shop. I don’t see any signs of overheating either.

HOWEVER

Coolant still looks like this:

Image

Still residual oil in the coolant, not actually a ton. This made the seller think the problem was bigger, so he listed it at 3000 and I got him to knock off 400 bucks in case I needed to do more major repairs.

BUT

I DON’T think it’s fucked at all. I think the dude just didn’t know to completely flush the system several times after its done. I checked the oil when I inspected the car and theres not a drop of coolant in it… so that’s an excellent sign. So I’m just gonna flush it thru a few times with a cleaner additive and I think that’ll clean it up. And, if not… meh. I have no problem pulling the head off a miata. I’m gonna probably do the timing belt anyway if it’s not very obviously fresh (I’d be SHOCKED if the shop didn’t insist on a timing belt replacement with the water pump and head gasket service).

Other things… it just needs some love. Quite a but of it. A complete teardown cleaning, a repaint in the future, and general servicing. Swap all the fluids, etc.

I already ordered a 5X racing shifter and a Raceseng :stig: knob. Shifter definitely needs help. The stock shifter bushing is probably in multiple pieces in there by the feel of it.

I’ll keep yall updated! Finally, a real project to make lots of posts about!

Hell yeah, congrats man!

Seems like a decent deal considering today's market. I got an equivalent condition all things considered NA like 10 years ago for $2K.

As someone who casually considers both Miata (again) and Elantra N ownershit from time to time, what is it that brought you back? Mostly the convertible aspect, a more raw driving experience, better :manuel: feel?

My hunch is he misses :cheese: :lolol:

We live just a bit too far apart for him to drive it regularly (~1hr on a good day) but he’s always open to when we hang

1) I wanted a project car and I pretty much know NA and NB miatas inside and out. Want something to transform without it being a money pit… just wanna get my money back out of it at the end.

2) I really felt a missed encounter with a Miata my dad had a couple years back. Got “totaled” by wet carpet from a hurricane (I’m still fucking pissed about that). 2001, Miami Blue, matching hardtop, just the right level of tastefully modded… I kinda fell in love with it. I bought :cheese: 2 months later. It filled the hole but never really scratched the exact itch I guess.

Got it, thanks man! So it's more project car needs than anything missing dynamically from the N? Obviously convertible/RWD are missing from that car, but outside of that :lolol:

The Slanty H Slanty N... kinda want. One of the few things that's actually enticing at it's price tag today.

Looking forward to the Miata build as well as ongoing comparisons to Miata versus slanty-slant.

 Slanty H Slanty N is quite good, can’t recommend highly enough. Put in the lower motor mount and she’s all set. No need for any brake upgrades… those stock pads work great on track
