Well sure, it's recommended/required to get the rated HP. But the engine won't :nuke: if you dump 87 in it. I ran 87 in my GTIs and ATS frequently. Less performance, but they ran just fine.
The flyover beatdown for 93 continues to amaze me. :deadhorse:
It's not even flyover :doe: , whole East Coast is the same. It's really only CA and a few other Western states that have "cheap" premium.

Tell me about it. Bought gas for :poorvette: today. 87 was $2.87 at the street. 93 was $3.47. $50 fill-up.

I :aintcare: because I just drive the car for fun, but the premium is still :disgust:

It's also just 91, so not really apples to apples.

yet 87 has more energy than 91 or 93 :bs:

Up here it's +$0.50 for 93 over 87.

Dunno about that. Just higher resistance to detonation, thus moar timing and moar ponies.

Lots of cars requiring premium now. Plus think of all the poors getting into used Bimmers and shit that required premium. Market demand is higher so prices at the pumps are up. We can't make enough premium. It DOES require quite a bit more effort to produce premium blend stocks than it does straight gasoline.

Yea, but I bet most people that buy cars that "require" premium don't put premium in. There's something else going on driving the crazy delta. I figured it's a cash grab from gas stations. People that buy it are way less price sensitive, so they can charge pretty much whatever.

That. More stable, resists detonation from compression much better, allowing more precise and aggressive spark timing and higher compression ratio in the engine design.

:225: boi is right on this one, 87 has more btu/gallon than 93, or most 100 and higer blends for that matter. Stuff that increased knock resistant takes away energy content. On the other end you have the diesel.

on the exact same engine optimized for 87 fuel.... it will make less power with 93.

now an engine optimized for 93 that you put 87 into with a knock sensor will make less power than 93, because engineering.

There's very little if any differences in BTU content between 87 and 93.

Higher octane resists detonation, which allows more compression and more ignition timing which allows MOAR of the BTU content to be used. Getting into race fuels,100+ octane, there's often an oxygenate at play, which again, allows more of hydrocarbons to be burned. Moar complete combustion = moar energy available to the tires.

I filled up 2 weeks ago and paid $3.69 for 93. 87 was $2.79. Ninety fucking cents more. :rage:

Detroit wrote: Tue Sep 18, 2018 2:33 pm Any stock car on stock tune will run on regular. Moran OEM engineers know that smart buyers will ignore the requirements and run regular. The warranty claims would be huge if premium was for real required like it is in modified vehicles.

The Si power bump could very likely only come from running premium.
GTI is the same. Although cap says 87 is okay, they note in the owner’s :manuel: that peak power and torque are achieved with premium fuel.

Also chebby should make a proper Sonic SS.
