You probably do have more bums They all freeze to death in MI so they're concentrated to downtown where you'll get carjacked if you get gas anyway.

Light came on last night, I cringed. I usually let it drop below a quarter tank and then fill up, when I have a normal commute.

Weird I have never been concerned about carjackings though. The bums/hookers are degenerate weaklings, they are not armed or mentally with it. So they don't pose a threat for that, just a nuisance.
NO WAY IN FKING HELL would I get gas in East Oakland, like I did that out of pure necessity once and it was one of the scariest experiences ever. That's where 's roam the streets and shit gets real fast...
The gas station attendants are behind 3" thick bulletproof glass, also... same applies to dominos pizza places don't ask me how i Know.
I also do about 36 miles a week of commuting, so a half tank lasts me a while.
But in all seriousness, in-tank pumps are cooled by the fuel they sit in, so if you run your tank low often enough, you do shorten the lifespan of the fuel pump.
Also, if I need to GTFO and go somewhere quickly, I don't want to be caught with my pants down with an empty tank.

I've heard that carjackings aren't as prominent here as they used to be, but when I moved here in 2013, they happened all the time. I just figured out where and have written off those areas. I don't even drive there.
The bums hang out at those stations too.
