FWIW you don't light the gas, you just spray it on with a garden sprayer. It's an effective weed killer that is way cheaper than Round Up or similar.

I used to do this with used motor oil.

[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 10:01 pmOne gallon of vinegar
One table spoon of soap
My mother in law also puts about half a cup of salt in which does seem to be more effective but I don't use it.
It can probably be any soap, just something that can cut through oil.
Back in the 70's this was not really on the popular radar in my hood. People also routinely poured it down the nearest sewer. But I did stop because of the groundwater thing.
It's supposed to be toxic, the goal is to keep all life out of the area in question.
Noted.[user not found] wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 9:05 amDang. We've had great success with it.Detroit wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 8:38 am I need to try vinegar and soap. I bought some vegitation killer at Home Depot that has done absolutely nothing. It was pricey AF and worthless.
Vinegar and soap sounds more promising.
I've also had terrible luck with weed barrier. We have a bunch of it in areas around the house and grass and weeds grow through it ZFG.
Vinegar and soap works great on hot days. So wait for one like that.
Tarp?[user not found] wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 6:27 amI may have missed the post but if you're clearing an area, why not burn it out with a tarp? That kills everything, seeds and all, in a couple weeks with zero effort. Then you sand and stone swap it with weed fabric and you have a growth barrier.troyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 10:31 pm

Long term solution.
Got it.[user not found] wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 9:08 amOr plastic sheeting. Basically you want to heat up the ground and burn everything out.
Thought I'd update this. 2 weeks after spreading my seed.wap wrote:Here are some pics of the area's I seeded. I'll update in a month or so to hopefully show some growth.

Shitty. I couldn't tend to it at all last summer while recouperating from my surgery so a lot of it died. I'm working on a different area this year that is looking ok. I'll get back to the section from the pic next year, or maybe I'll put down some seed later in the fall.
I bought a used tractor style for now, 46 inch 22 hp Briggs. if it's not enough for the land I'll buy a bigger one.[user not found] wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 9:35 pmGet a 60" zero turn. /threadBig Brain Bradley wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 7:46 am resurrecting this thread. I know this is old, but I've done this trying out things to get away from spending money on Roundup.[user not found] wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 10:22 amApparently vinegar and dawn dish soap is effective too, pertroyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 6:42 pm FWIW you don't light the gas, you just spray it on with a garden sprayer. When we moved to texas we bought a house in a developing subdivision. We were among the first 50% of houses I think in that specific area. My mom wanted a desert landscape front yard. She went down to a construction site and asked the guys to bring up 2 boulders they had blasted up. Dude jumped in the front end loader and said whichever ones you want $20 each. Drove em up the street and plopped them in the front yard. Dad was very when he got home that dayDesertbreh wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 4:02 pmI don't know the precise cost of something like this. Rocks and mature cactus in particular are not free doe. TBH, it's just something I'd address if I had more time....it seems like household stuff goes pretty slow for us.troyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:45 pm
Couldn't $300/mo fund a setup like that within a couple of years? I guess that shit all costs more than I think since I don't care about rocks/plants. I'd be cool with gravel covering the property, then using gasoline to kill/prevent weeds.
Your gravel and gasoline idea, while humorous is, The above is sort of a Scottsdale/Sedona "magical desert" type situ, what you are suggesting....flat gravel...adds an element of poverty and despair to someplace already too hot. Your gasoline idea would likely draw some comments from the HOA.
