Treasures of the Great Grand-Huckle

I've been helping my mom clean out her attic and came across a treasure trove of items from my Great Grandfather and his time served in World War I. My Great Grandfather was William A. Twamley, and he served as 1st Lieutenant in the 115th Infantry of the 29th Division. I have found items such as his helmet, medals, dog tags, and other military items, but what has astonished me the most are the pictures I'm about to share. These are photos that he took during his time in WWI, spanning from the start at Camp McClellan in Alabama to his return to Newport News, Virginia a year later. Even more impressive than his taking the time to photograph his journey through the war during a time when cameras were not plentiful are the notes that he took on a majority of the photos. Over a hundred years later, these notes and photos have given me a firsthand account of things that occurred during his time in the war. So far, I have found 122 photos, and some of the numbered photos are missing. If I find more, I will add them to the thread.

This is absolutely awesome. Somewhere on my storage I have a bunch of very old photos from when I was doing photo restoration full time at a pro lab circa 2002-2006 in North Carolina

They were just sitting in a crate in an attic. I had no idea that they were there until we started going through things. The house was originally my grandmother's, so things just sat in the attic even after my mom bought it from her.

Wow. Suggest you store them in acid-free plastic envelopes. Do you also have the negatives?

I currently have them in a plastic freezer bag, but am looking to get an album with plastic sleeves to store them in. My main goal was to scan them all in so that I had digital copies. I'm in the process now of trying to figure out how to scan the battle maps that I found showing the lines for the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

Maybe try an art supply store, or a photography store, if they still exist, to find something safer to store them in other than a freezer bag. :like:
Any negatives?

Thanks so much for sharing these man, super fascinating! I love that he wrote captions on all of them, it really takes you back and makes you think about how crazy and hard those times must have been. Incredible time capsule to have preserved in the attic, glad to see they all survived their time up there unscathed.

Amazing share, very cool stuff.

Have you thought about submitting to the national archives? IDK how much of this kind of detailed photographic accounts they have from WW1, but I would think this would be a good addition in any case.
