so we hired a new sales manager (apprently. haven't been up to sales for almost 11 months now) and they handed him a fancy new 2017 Highlander Limited as a demo two weeks ago.
Today he came in, gave me the keys and said "the check engine light is on and it won't move. I had to drive it 10 miles here at about 15 miles an hour and it won't go faster than 20"
I do some digging and find out he called out yesterday because he was snowed in.
The guy beached the car on some ice and tried to drive it out. The right front tire is down to 7/32" and the left front is still new. The car has 713 miles on it, and he smoked the transmission. There's 13 trans related trouble codes in the system. Trans fluid is smoked, burnt, and black as tar. It's thick.
This is the first year of the new 8 speed Direct Auto Trans in this car so when I went to go order the part it threw warning flags. Corporate called. They want a teardown to find the cause of failure, because it's a brand new trans design. Field engineer is coming. Also, because the demo isn't titled, we can't put a reman trans in it, so we have to get a new one... which has to come off the production line. There is a strong possibility now that once they come out and see this, we're gonna be on the hook for a trans due to "abuse".
A new trans has a MSRP of $7800, plus labor booked at 17.2 hours.
$10k fuckup.

They are in a separate building on a separate lot 1/4 mile down the street. The new sales management sucks. Morale there blows. Numbers suck. Field engineer is coming on Monday to inspect, because they want 100% capture/data on ANY trans related concern on these new transmissions. If he sees burnt fluid, that's explainable. Once he sees a smoked tire, brake dust caked all over the R/F wheel from the traction control and a tire worn 3/32" after 700 miles, we quickly move in to "driver abuse, not covered by warranty" territory and the dealership is left holding the bill for a $10k repair, that we then have to disclose to a potential buyer.
If I leave it as it is, the sales dept is on the hook for $10k.
I found a new service loaner with the same wheesl, same tires/DOT numbers (looks like the thing was built in the same week as the other one) that has ~200 miles on it. I brought it home tonight so I could wear out the "newness" on the tires a little, and tomorrow I'll take it in early so I can swap the wheel and front brakes over so it looks less fishy. My only issues could be the overspeed codes in the ECM thanks to the new DTC's that exist, but I could explain that as the guy driving it here vs towing it.

Check bolded. I would NOT get remotely involved because this is not your problem. And doing that is ethically fucked, both to the manufacturer and to the potential buyer of EITHER carfledonfoot wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2017 7:23 pmThey are in a separate building on a separate lot 1/4 mile down the street. Replacement of a transmission on a new car is not the most uncommon thing in the world. I honestly don't care what happens, as long as I get my split of the $10k repair.
