Not saying it isn't, but the road maintenance budget has to get funded somehow.

Yep, $20K year X 4 years of high school sort of wipes out any "cheap license plates" or other state to state advantages. This can all be solved by not having cf, of course.Huckleberry wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 8:52 amPublic schools in Delaware are shitty, especially the highschools. It's incredibly liberating to give zero fucks about quality schools when choosing a place to live.Desertbreh wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 10:48 amYep, $20K year X 4 years of high school sort of wipes out any "cheap license plates" or other state to state advantages. Here we at least get a break on the front end. We have the trade in credit and vehicle sales tax is only 3%... so you pay out the ass each year but less in the beginning.4zilch wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 10:28 amYeah sort of. But then again, if I've already paid 7% sales tax (in Indiana) why am I getting taxed on it year after year. Compared to other states with annual renewal it's pretty aggravating.coogles wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 9:23 am
Just registering the Atlas and GTI this year cost us over $500, but at least as cars get older they get cheaper to register. Sort of makes sense? If you can afford a brand new car, you can also afford to pay more to register the thing. At least our property and income taxes are low.

Thanks guys. I’m hoping it’s nothing, or if it is something that we caught it early again since I just had that last appointment in July and she thought things looked normal. Should know in the next week or two.

I ran yesterday morning and ended up riding as well. A new buddy invited me for a group ride last night, it's just an easy 12 urban miles on mostly vintage road bikes, some fixies, weird ass builds, etc. I wound up riding 22 miles between commuting to/from the start and the ride. It started at this bike shop that's really more of an outdoor patio bar. A bunch of picnic tables sitting in a little yard in the city with $3 24 ounce cans of PBR (and other stuff). It was wicked fun, a bunch of rowdy hipsters zooming around the city, hopping curbs, etc. It was amazing the difference between that and the "real cyclists" group rides on the road.
In4 COVID shaming.

It's a joke in MI. If you trade in a vehicle, they knock off up to $2k of the difference on the sales price, so it's like $100 savings on tax. 6% too.

Yeah, I really enjoy PBR/Miller High Life as much as most beer... it's normally OK for me, I think the issue was I slammed five beers throughout the ride and had only half of my "bidon" of water. I rode pretty hard going home and probably sweated a good bit, it was late and I wanted to get home and was hauling ass on the greenway because I was buzzed. The greenway was fun as hell to bomb while empty.

5 beers during activity with minimal water is a recipe for disaster the next day.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 11:33 amYeah, I really enjoy PBR/Miller High Life as much as most beer... it's normally OK for me, I think the issue was I slammed five beers throughout the ride and had only half of my "bidon" of water. I've never ridden buzzed, but I do enjoy empty bike paths.

And how are you finding these groups? FB? Is there an app you use? I want to find some groups to ride with locally. Would be a great way to meet people, but I'm a bit intimidated because I don't think I could do a 50+ mile hammer ride. Would rather just derp and meet people.
Th big ride I did Saturday I found on MeetUp.com. After the 84 miles we all grabbed a beer/burger at this patio place where we started. I got to talking to one dude who drove there in a GTI, he had noticed the C5 with bike rack and is pretty big into cars/old bikes, so he wasDetroit wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 11:40 am And how are you finding these groups? I haven't really looked on FB but it seems meetup.com, Instagram, and FB are the main sources.
As mentioned in the bike thread to Troy, if there's not a ride you want to do, simply create one on meetup and facebook, seemingly there are existing groups everywhere whether or not they're actually active. If they haven't done anything this year and get pinged with a new ride, I bet people will join.
If you create something, you could probably copy/paste or get an idea of what to propose from here: https://www.meetup.com/Charlotte-Area-Cycling

I'm really glad to have met him as he seems like one of the few dudes who is down with both serious road riding as well as just having fun/drinking beer on bikes. I really liked all of the people I met at both of these rides, but there's not a huge crossover between the full carbon bike leg shavers and the chill hipsters.

I'm in the opposite boat. I'm trying to find new hobbies to get into.

It's funny because most people talk about golf being pricey. I am not an expert, but every time I've golfed, it's been like $30-60 depending on course, then all you need is clubs. You can get basic sets for not a ton of money. Cycling and track day/cars are sooo much more money. The other nice thing about golf is it's far more socially acceptable and understood, so in theory, you may get less push back from others in your life, and you can even use golf to network at work, with in-laws, etc.
I think right now though, I'd vote cycling as the best hobby. It is great for you, good for the planet in many ways, cheaper than car stuff, there are many forms, so you can do fun urban cruising, long haul road stuff, in the woods rides, it offers a lot. It can be done socially or alone which is nice.
It's certainly the flavor of the week for me

Nothing wrong with it as a networking thing and if the family thing works it works, but if you start busting out huge MIA chunks on the weekend on a spouse/SO who had no early warning/acceptance of the activity, you may run into some pushback. Golf is an epic time suck, particularly if you want to invest enough time to enjoy it/be worth a damn at it.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 1:06 pm

Tough to do in northern MI, though apparently the weather there is still slightly better than here.D Griff wrote:I think right now though, I'd vote cycling as the best hobby.
