Took off from PDX at 10am PST, we’ll get to Newark around 6pm EST, and leave from there around 7:30 to arrive in Dublin around 7am local time Friday morning. I leave Monday morning to come home while Michelle and Kaeilani continue on to London through next Friday.
Why do you have to "convince yourself"? Dublin is an awesome and fun city with a neat vibe. Be sure to check out the Temple Bar area.

I would love to be Dublin bound. However, I would be in business class with a bucket of Johnnie Walker perusing the 70 movies I've thought about watching but never have, as opposed to flying 10 hours next to an infant. Different setup.

Godspeed at Newark. Fuck that fucking place man.

So I was flying out of Newark Friday night... after the flight was delayed like three hours, I thought, maybe it'll be dece because I got upgraded to first... well, to start, no bevvies offered prior to take off, which :wtf: , I paid zero bucks to be upfront but still. Then, we get stuck on the tarmac for another hour so the Cheeto could land to have some kinda weekend golf outing. Then, we get in the sky and I order a Goose Island IPA, they are out and only have Bud Lite, told her to just keep it and give me all the snacks.

American Air is a terrible company.

:notwrong: but it does help if the final destination is a cool place. And I forget that Europe is a lot farther for a west-coaster than for someone who lives 30 minutes from O'Hare and can fly to many European cities direct.

:dat: Europe from here isn't bad. I can get a direct flight from CLT if I'm willing to pay up and it's not a ton further than going to CA. Or transfers in DC, NY, or Boston are pretty reasonable.

True story about international flight. In 1991 I flew to Berlin to hang out with my buddy for about 10 days. I walked back into the smoking section to enjoy a cig after a few buckets of scotch. The smoke did not obey the line of demarcation between smoking and non smoking. I feel like a :jackass: retropspectively, but those were really the rules in even the early 90s. Pretty dumb.

13 hours of travel time, not counting the time lost to time changes each way, for less than 72 hours in Ireland before I turn around and fly back. And as Breh pointed out, that first 13 hour leg is with an 11 month old infant. Plus I just don’t like traveling in general. All of hmthat is compounded by the fact that I was originally supposed to be in Canada right now visiting one of my best friends, but had to cancel that trip to make this trip for her parents.

All that said, I can’t complain too hard as FIL paid for us to come out with them. I’ll show up with a smile on my face and earn brownie points with the wife and in-laws, but inside I’ll be wishing I was elsewhere.

Lol so far every single person has had the same sentiment about Newark. Hoping our layover is uneventful. Just over an hour, so that’s nice at least.

So what did you dislike about it so much? Just all the work of maintaining?

My mom has a camper... bought for like $3K from a friend. They got some good use out of it. It's now 'illegally' (per HOA) parked at her house due to many circumstances, mainly around my grandma and dad dying.

My uncle told her she should keep a car parked in front of it instead of in the garage because someone could 'just back right in and take it' to which I told her would be a pretty big favor to her :lolol: She seemed not amused :doe:
Maintenance hasnt been bad I guess, but its another thing to take care of for sure. Ive had to fix the battery disconnect, various trim, leaks, etc. Upgraded some things too, made storage easier access, better locks, extra bad padding.

It mostly just a fuckton of work to go. packing, hitching up, securing, leveling, setting up...then break it all down and pack up a few days later...get home and do the reverse again, sometimes to let all the shit dry out if it rained. With the dogs its even more difficult. If we do non- dog activities we have to haul in the kennels, set them up, then break them down.... everywhere you look is just extra work on your 'vacation'

Camping - its basically hanging out with extra steps.

The shitter is finicky. If its not sloped just right the slideout leaks like a mother in the rain when open. Its loud. It shakes. The shower is tiny af. 0.0% chance of :dock: on camping trips.
Desertbreh wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 2:15 pm

When someone says "camper" I think of the unit that slides into a pickup bed. I assume this is some kind of trailer? I am somewhat intrigued by some high end Sprinter Van conversions I have seen, but then I think how much money they really cost, and how many hotel rooms that represents.
Ours is a trailer, 17' living about 20' over all with one slide out.

Your description above paints a hard reality. I mean, if you can park at this secluded spot with majestic views, river runs through it, birds chirping happily, deer bounding in the meadows, all that jazz......ok. But what the chances of that really happening? A lot of campsites are.....not great.

yup. but some are. It can go off grid, we cant. not enough water storage. we get 30 gal fresh, 20 gray, 20 black. we use that in a day. So we stuck at campsites. some are nice, some are not great. If we dont have hookups its bath house potties and showers....and in 3 days the black tank is full and the gray well on the way. :dat:

:tits: has friends who are big into this lifestyle, major breeders with bunches of kids and such, somehow own/afford six figure rigs with goosenecks, HD :truk: , etc.

The places they 'camp' are fucking disgusting. One of the most frequent is Myrtle Beach... you're basically in a huge field in the sweltering heat with a bunch of other breeders, you have to fight parking at the beach because it's not walking distance, no water views in site at camp... meanwhile, you could pay $500/night to get a three bedroom oceanfront condo. Your camper probably depreciates that much on the 150 mile drive from here to there.

Another heinous one is Disney - they do it often. Similarly heinous for similar reasons but way more money.

High effort, but backpacking in to camp is the way to go IMO. Load up your gear, and just walk until it’s you and whatever water source you’re setting up camp next to. Would love to get back to doing that one day. Used to do some epic backpacking trips in Boy Scouts.

Reconnected with my old scoutmaster a year or so back. I need to hit him up for some of the locations he used to take us to. Would be fun to recreate with K when she’s older if she has any interest.
