A five mile hike takes you away from a pretty fair percentage of Papa Whiskey Tango. The distance hiked/PWT encountered graph goes up exponentially from there.SAWCE wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 5:06 pm High effort, but backpacking in to camp is the way to go IMO. Load up your gear, and just walk until it’s you and whatever water source you’re setting up camp next to. Would love to get back to doing that one day. Used to do some epic backpacking trips in Boy Scouts.
Reconnected with my old scoutmaster a year or so back. I need to hit him up for some of the locations he used to take us to. Would be fun to recreate with K when she’s older if she has any interest.

I will make one concession here. Infield at Talladega 500, full battle ready diesel pusher, I'm in.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 4:50 pmDesertbreh wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 4:11 pm
Your description above paints a hard reality. I mean, if you can park at this secluded spot with majestic views, river runs through it, birds chirping happily, deer bounding in the meadows, all that jazz......ok. But what the chances of that really happening? A lot of campsites are.....not great.
has friends who are big into this lifestyle, major breeders with bunches of kids and such, somehow own/afford six figure rigs with goosenecks, HD
, etc.
The places they 'camp' are fucking disgusting. One of the most frequent is Myrtle Beach... you're basically in a huge field in the sweltering heat with a bunch of other breeders, you have to fight parking at the beach because it's not walking distance, no water views in site at camp... meanwhile, you could pay $500/night to get a three bedroom oceanfront condo. Your camper probably depreciates that much on the 150 mile drive from here to there.
Another heinous one is Disney - they do it often. Similarly heinous for similar reasons but way more money.

The Sabrina basin was a great launching point for some backpacking. We’d go up to Blue and Dingleberry (

Have done, is 5/7. I just slept in a work vehicle at the time though.Desertbreh wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 5:40 pmI will make one concession here. Infield at Talladega 500, full battle ready diesel pusher, I'm in.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 4:50 pm

My wife is lucky… I’m a yes man and agree to most of her shenanigans. These trips are the one thing we’ve been invited to that I just outright refuse to go. We could even use my mom’s camper/Durango for free, but still… Just. Fuck. No.Desertbreh wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 5:28 pmWow. Friends and I used to do something not too dissimilar, but with canoes. We'd rent a few canoes and paddle down a river for a few days, stopping at islands along the way to pitch tents and set up camp for the night. It was fantastic.SAWCE wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 5:06 pm High effort, but backpacking in to camp is the way to go IMO. I’ve done that twice launching from the Hoover Dam and canoeing down the Colorado. Pullover when you’re done paddling for the day, find some rocks to jump off of into the river, swim, play, cook, and eat before sleeping the day off and doing it all over he next day. Great way to spend a couple days with some bros.wap wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 7:23 pmFriends and I used to do something not too dissimilar, but with canoes. I backpacked in New Hampshire over Covid, it was so fantastic. I miss that stuff, lots of cool trips in scouts growing up as well.
Dunno if this is considered political, but it's kinda sad to me that they’ve combined the genders and sort of wrecked scouting. Boy and Girl Scouts of America were both cool organizations, why can’t we just do that?

It starts by not putting pronouns into every day life and ruining it for every person who doesn’t identify with thatD Griff wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 8:23 pm I backpacked in New Hampshire over Covid, it was so fantastic. I miss that stuff, lots of cool trips in scouts growing up as well.
