Gberg2119 wrote: Fri Oct 25, 2024 2:40 pm So I finally reached out and got an estimate on the shifter install from the indie BMW shop. Still waiting to hear back from the performance group at the dillership but I can't imagine they're much different.

6 hours of labor at $165 an hour. Just over $1k after taxes. Soooooooooo. I guess I probably should've looked more into shifter installs on these cars before buying one.
6 hrs for a shifter? Do you drop a subframe and the trans for it?
Nope. I knew they were kind of a pain in the ass to install, but I was expecting about 3 hours.

That whole shifter arm thing needs to come out from the bottom of the car. OE on the top, the short shifter itself on the bottom.

Yikes man... $1K to install a shifter is pretty :disappoint: Possible to DIY?

No way. Finding instructions for install is difficult enough on this. With that shifter arm coming out I'm assuming some disassembly needs to be done in the car too.

Another install video I found but for the Rogue kit. Not really DIY friendly.

I mean. I’d probably tackle that myself. But then again it’s an M3 not a GTI so maybe I wouldn’t. Lol. Who knows. If you forget to plug something back in it might get totaled.

If you can afford an M3, $1K is install mods is peasant change. Forward!

Also it looks like something you could spend 10 hours on yourself and still have to take it to the shop.

Last wash before the winter ramz go on within the next few weeks.

Also, pay thousands of dollars for PPF prevent rock chips. Find a tiny dent on the hood. :triggered:

The PPF is fine so no scratches with it. It’s maybe a little bit smaller than a dime midway up the hood. It looks like dents can be fixed with PPF on top so I guess I’ll look for a PDR guy.

Carboner hoods are only on the CS/CSL. :disappoint:

Yep. He priced out the Rogue engineering one despite me saying in the initial message that I have the AutoSolutions shifter. I mentioned it again but I doubt the labor will be any different since that shifter arm thing still needs to come out for both of them.

Not sure what else to do. Keep shopping quotes?

I'd be curious about the labor break out here... Is this 7+ hrs of labor?

I'm completely :mindblown: . Had I known this is what it costs I probably wouldn't have bought it.
max225 wrote: Mon Oct 28, 2024 12:33 pm I'd be curious about the labor break out here... Is this 7+ hrs of labor?
He didn't give me a breakdown but if the indie place is 6 hours @ $165 per hour, the diller is probably well over $200 per hour.

It's 575 miles via I-95 and I-85 at 9 hours. Highway trips I can get about 25 mpg and the fuel tank is 15.6 gallons. Probably only have to fill up once, maybe twice depending on traffic so it's definitely more economical. :lolol:

Response back when I asked if labor is the same for the AutoSolutions shifter. Part of me wonders if they see G80 M3 and just see dollar signs.
Yes! For that job after speaking with the technician, you pretty much have to remove the transmission.

Yeah there's probably not a thinktank of master techs out there figuring out ways to keep M3 short shifter installs reasonable.

I actually got a realistic estimate back! This spread is kind of insane. Just want to hear what Tyspeed says before I confirm with Bimmer Clinic but both are about an hour away from me.

Autobahn Motorsport: $1k
Thompson Performance Group: $2k
RT Tuning: Unknown. They’ve never done one before but he thinks a minimum 2 hours @ $195 per.
Bimmer Clinic: $360.
Tyspeed: Unknown. Got a message on Thursday saying someone was reviewing it and would get back to me within 24-48 hours. Nothing so far.
