I prefer it to the GM 6-speeds I've experienced, along with any other not great slushbox. The tech has really come a long way. I'd still prefer a for driving but I will say letting the car drive itself takes the transmission out of the equation. The ability to tune out a bit is nice. Dangerous, but nice.

You get one at sticker new... Drive the piss out of it for 80-100k miles and sell for 70% of msrp. And in that time frame you do nothing but oil changes and 1 set of tires...

Then sell it off to some sucker who will have to "service" the head gasket etc. They are 100% bulletproof until 100k miles and then just disintegrate into dust after

Here's the problem and why the self-loathing is so bad...I actually don't think there was a better move, regardless of the wife situation. I don't feel like I settled at all because there isn't a single vehicle for under $30k all-in that I'd rather have for what I personally want/need. That includes the MINIs I was considering. Yes, after living with the CTrek I like it better than I think I would have the Countryman, and certainly more than the Clubman. The whole small AWD lifted hatchback thing is my ideal vehicle. I've been driving for so long that I forgot how much I loved compact sized hatchbacks, and this thing fixes the drawbacks of most that are too low to the ground to handle the terrain/weather where I am. Garbage roads are ZFG, there's no scraping the front fascia going into an uneven dirt parking lot, it handles 2 tracks just fine, it just goes anywhere without drama. Nobody else makes a vehicle like this, you're forced into a tall box thing most of the time that I really don't want. I probably would have liked an Alltrack, but I think Subaru's tech and reliability is superior, not to mention I would have paid just as much for one as I did this new Subaru.

If only they made a turbro but with the 2.5, this thing is 80-90% of the way to perfect.

The CVT thing... it really depends manufacturer to manufacturer. Some of the Youtube auto people have continually said Subie does it best. The Nissan and Honda ones are pretty fucking painful to deal with.

I haven't seen a used cross trek here for under 20k for the last 3 years. If you don't load em up with options they don't depreciate... strong price floor on these. Which is why I was considering a new one...

I like the torque of a turbro, but the 2.5 really is decent.

The Crosstrek somehow engine brakes. It must be its ability to "shift" where it just stays in a certain ratio, but we have a lot of somewhat steep hills around us, and the car maintains speed really well going down them. There's very few downsides to the transmission, other than the lack of a clutch pedal.

The seats. These are unique to the sport trim, but listed as water repellant right on the window sticker, they mimic wetsuit material. They're surprisingly soft and supple, but as I mentioned, we often drive back from the boat in damp bathing suits, it's really nice to not worry about setting a towel down to sit on first. They're really easy to wipe clean too. Not sure farts can penetrate them either.

I haven't experienced particular breathability issues with them yet, even in heat. No worse than a leather seat in that regard. The cleaning aspect is worth it to me.

I didn't know much about them either, I learned about the Sport as I was standing next to it and the gave me the run-down. The Sport is pretty awesome. Poverty headlights are probably the biggest complaint most would have, but the halogens are pretty damned good.

I agree with you on the tablet thing, though. I have a feeling there will be some major moments with trying to do shit while driving. I very much wish it had the older center stack like the other models in the lineup.

Yea...so that's going to suck and/or take some adjustment. We voiced concern with the screen in the Outback with our and he said that voice recognition has gotten really good and you can just talk to the car to make it do things. I countered that fucking google "assistant" can only understand me maybe half the time and I didn't have much faith in a car company doing better since I work for one. We all chuckled and he admitted that they've been getting a lot of complaints about the Outback screen.

It's cheaper for the company and has some glitz to be like TESLA , but I just don't like these do-all screens. My JT had a do-all 7" screen and it sucked. I guess the larger screen could help, but if things are kept independent then it's easier to use on the fly. I just love the separate screens and physical controls in the Crosstrek.

Another weird thing...we were cross shopping the Crosstrek and Outback. I really wanted proximity entry because I HATE taking the keyfob out of my pocket to unlock a car with pushbutton start. The Crosstrek Sport gets it, but the Outback Premium they had in stock didn't and was $3k more.
