I disagree, but my disagreement is illogical. I think the size of the chrome kidneys on new X5s is gross.....like this is a BMW, now an Electra 225. But these are BBK's....and I'm cool with them.

You could get an E36 M3 for like $5K not long ago... now a decent one if five figures. I don't really know that they are all that great. It seems the E90 is the one to get right now, they'll start to go up soon.max225 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 1:46 pmYep. It is interesting that E36s were all ragged to shit which is how I got mine for $1900 and then sold for $4100 after fixing it up... nowadays a clean E36s is really starting to climb quick.
I bought my E46s knowing that but I couldn't wait 10 years because the car was just too unreliable to keep for that long. Never again. You also can't drive them... you have to keep miles well under 80k in order to preserve the value...

Man some of these are still affordable.
To your point though, you have to maintain an M through all of that.
My issue with them is that they are $$$ to track from what I've read. As you pointed out, the parts are really pricey to burn through at that rate.

To be honest ... sub 10k m3s always had issues or 100k+ miles. I checking out a fresh 1997 silver manuel with the Vader’s for 12,900 and that was ... 10 years ago Almost. I’m surprised they haven’t gone up furtherD Griff wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 2:12 pmYou could get an E36 M3 for like $5K not long ago... now a decent one if five figures. The USDM S52 tho is bulletproof, and the rest of the car shares parts with the rest of the E36 line.max225 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 2:31 pmTo be honest ... sub 10k m3s always had issues or 100k+ miles. They're not prohibitively expensive like the E30's or the E46's bespoke engine parts.

Yeah they are pretty cool cars, I'd love to own one. I just wouldn't really want to pay more than like $10-12K and there aren't any decent ones for that cheap. I don't need cherry garage queen, just don't want a total shitbox.

An E36 is no more "fun" other than being "rare" now. Also countless "Old car shit" on that car taking away from the fun... My E36 from a decade ago had these age related failures
1. PS hoses leaking
2. Engine oil pan leaking
3. shot bushings all over the suspension
4. Busted leadliner
5. Door panels that delaminated
6. broken door handle because they are brittle plastic
7. tons of brittle plastic all over
8. Busted speakers, (they dry rotted out)
9. Busted driveshaft rubber bushings (weird term for it i can't remember)
10. Worn leather on arm rests (they all wear out)
11. Busted cats (used take off installed illegally to keep costs own otherwise $2k)
12. Busted rear exhaust (they all rust out from the inside out over time)
And this is a 1992 model in... 2009 I can't imagine another 11 years on top of that.

Mechanically they can be made whole for less than $2,000.max225 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 4:07 pmAn E36 is no more "fun" other than being "rare" now. Also countless "Old car shit" on that car taking away from the fun... My E36 from a decade ago had these age related failures

The interior of these was the first gen to be made with low VOC glues and materials, and they have not held up well.
And this is a 1992 model in... 2009 I can't imagine another 11 years on top of that.
The cosmetic interior can also be done with dyes, glues and replacement broken bits.
Unfortunately, you'll have to live with a few eye sores because the parts are NLA.
This is YMMV, I know you're not a big DIY guy, so factor in shop fees and it gets expensive quick.
