Just like everything else, religion is fine in moderation.
:dat:

I’ll agree that it should be left out of politics, but people here like to bash individuals for their personal beliefs when those beliefs have no effect on them whatsoever.

That's exactly right.

Not paying your mortgage but paying the church? That's just irresponsible. No organization should force you to pay them before your normal life obligations (unless that organization is covering those obligations, I guess)

Not taking precautions or downplaying the threat of a virus like this because it's "god's plan" or whatever is also ridiculous IMO.
But that text that was posted in here isn’t downplaying it. It said they're wearing masks and following social distancing, but then acknowledges their belief that whatever happens is going to happen as part of their god’s plan.

People who will continue to tithe when not able to pay their bills are probably few and far between and I agree that there shouldn’t be a pressure to pay your tithings if you aren’t able to afford your other financial obligations.

It does affect us all. Religious organizations teaching people not to think creates non-thinking citizens whose votes count the same as ours, thus :thankstrump:

Religious organizations paying no fucking taxes means that WE are effectively paying for them to do that.

PA asked everyone to stay at home.
Some of my far right friends started posting shit like the .gov is trying to take over, this is how it starts, be wary of power grabs, they have no right to restrict me, yada yada.

 :caspian:
NJ will be confiscating PPE from businesses and individuals according to our .gov. Businesses need to submit inventories so they know how much to take. So yeah, .gov is definitely overreaching.

Instead of spending billions on illegals, maybe they should have had supplies ready? :iono:
Requisitioning medical supplies in a national medical emergency is kinda the point of having a government in the first place to be fair.

But yeah, having a stock pile ourselves is the best option.

Disclaimer: I can only speak about the Mormon church as that is where all of my religious experience is. I grew up in the church, my dad was our bishop for many years, mom served in several different roles within our ward. I personally never really believed in all of it, which is why I don’t actively practice today or really count myself as being Mormon. That said, I do believe that there is a god and that he has some sort of plan for us regardless of how shitty some things may seem.

I guess my experience growing up as Mormon is different than other people’s experience with religion. Having faith in a higher power isn’t teaching you not to think, it’s teaching you to have hope. Of course, other religions may be doing it differently, I obviously can’t speak for all of them and their teachings/expectations.

The tithes called into question funds the Mormon religion as well. I’m sure there are some tax breaks that they get, but the church is largely “self”-sufficient based on member contributions.

You’re right with the anti-gay stuff unfortunately. I know there are some more progressive non-denomination churches that are more open about sexuality, but that’s one area where the Mormon church is largely wrong, IMO. There are a lot more members of the church who are progressive/democratic/whatever you want to call them, and are openly gay and pushing for that equality, so hopefully the church as an organization comes around in time. However I also understand why they wouldn’t as their doctrine isn’t fire and brimstone with God hating groups of people like some religions are.

I've been fascinated by the Mormon religion for a while, and have had in depth discussions with past co workers who are/were Mormon about the beliefs.

People are quick to judge because of the underlying foundation of the religion, but I think that in practice, Mormons get more right in day-to-day living than many other religions.

The church, and the people in it are definitely not without fault, but I agree with you. Most of them are pretty easy going, just doing their own thing, and trying to be good people. One of their “articles of faith”, kind of tenants of the religion, even states that they believe in letting everyone worship how, where, and what they may. Very live and let live.

Horseshoe pit would be fun if you have enough space in your yard for it. The area could double as a cornhole spot and just drag the board out for that when you want to switch games.

It doesn't hurt that I've never met a mean Mormon.

I haven't met a lot, but it's still :impressive:

It's the evangelicals and fundamentalists that are the problem. Those people are so out of touch with reality it's sad...and as Zach and Troy mentioned, they're driving WAY too much in Washington.

We just rented a mini skidsteer to get the backyard into shape. It's been torn up since we started our garage project last summer :excited: to get it fixed up finally.

I agree with a lot of this. I think the outright disdain for religion around here is a bit much. Frankly, most of the members are equally as closed minded towards religious people as the religious people are themselves about the issues at hand. On top of that, the percentage of religious people who disdain gays (one issue as an example) is extremely low in my anecdotal experience. I went to Catholic school for 13 years and several folks who I grew up going to school with are now :gay: and yet their families still embrace them, nothing changed in the group of friends. There are certainly areas where many churches/religious orgs could be better, but there are also areas where religious orgs do tons of life changing work - feeding third world countries, educating kids with no access, providing clean water supplies, you name it. In my own personal experience, the good of them typically outweighs the bad.

That is really all I'll say about this as I don't care to discuss my personal beliefs or lack thereof around here and I am obviously in a small minority of the group, so I normally just let it go.

They are a minuscule percentage of the population, they are just the loudest and most sensationalized. A lot of this is because they're a shitshow and people love that (looking at Tiger King as an example).

Also, since we acquired Control4 based in Draper, UT, I have a ton of Mormon coworkers now, they have all been extremely welcoming and nice. While they don't typically drink, cuss, etc. they don't seem to judge anyone else for doing so.

We also sold a ton of audio consoles to LDS at my old job and they were a dope client.

Yeah I can agree with that for sure.

I’m admittedly pretty ignorant about most political happenings. My white privilege I guess.. would it be nice to not pay taxes and take home my full paycheck, yes, but that’ll never happen so IDGAF about it.

If religious organizations were taxed and regulated like every other business then I'd hate them a lot less. It's one thing to spread your message on your own dime, it's another thing entirely to do it while being subsidized by all of us.

I certainly don't disagree with that.

Like :sawce: I'm far from politically aware, but I would love to see some damn flat/standardized taxation rules in this country... like no deductions/exemptions, just create the brackets for individuals and businesses and :dealwithit:

switching to voice to text so bear with voice to text.

what it boils down to, it's probably about 10% of the population is fucking retarded intheir own special way. people who like to hate on religion highlight that 10% that go to church who are also dumb just like the 10% who don't go to church. The 10% that don't go to church might be wasted on booze drugs whatever, and a 10% hadoo go to church that happened to escape booze and drugs and whatever, just make other bad decisions.

unfortunately the mega churches prey on that lower 10% and concentrate them, and make them a target.
