Gotcha, Everyday Driver Car Debate has recommended them sum and it seems they fall off a cliff in value. Maybe by the time you stop tire kickin' they'll be $25K.
Johnny_P's Street Parking Palooza
They're
Probably cheaper to own overall... won't depreciate much... just get the nicest $25K one around?

Yea honestly I don’t see how going from an STI to a jelly belly CUV is not an improvement of 300%. How soft does that ride need to be ? You’d think a bit firmer ride would actually let you cling on to whatever is left of the car guy soul.
I drove the last gen CX5 through bombed out sf over a bunch of needles and bums, pot holes and cuntstruction. And it was perfectly adequate.

JP for what it's worth I feel like you haven't really given the CX-5 due consideration and I feel it would be ideal for your needs.
Have you taken it somewhere for an estimate yet? Cavallos?Johnny_P wrote:So I'm nearly 3 years in and it finally happened. The car got smacked while parked and some jackwad broke the tail light and really dicked up the bumper. I think it was a side view mirror. They were making the final cut back move while parallel parking and the completely misjudged where his/her front wheels were and they went straight into the side of teh rear bumper. Nice cut lines all over it, combined with aforementioned tail light and gouging higher up. Of course they just drove off.
I'm pretty beat down about this. I'm trying to stay positive, in that it's taken 3 years to get to the point that it needs new plastic, which is about 1 year longer than I had predicted. Doesn't really change the fact that I'm upset by this whole situation. It's hard for a "car guy" to not give a shit when someone damages the thing you love with absolutely no fucks given on their part.
Anyways. I think the STI's time is up. It's been an awesome car and I love it to death I just can't deal with being a car enthusiast in this shithole. Lisa and I were discussing it and we are going to start looking for something to replace it now that I have steady incoming paychecks
Needs:
-$25k max price. I can afford way more than this but I want it to be somewhat NFG and not care too much if it gets damaged.
-AWD/4WD
-Automatic
-25 MPG highway at minimum
-87 octane
-SUV/CUV/hatch/wagon body style
-Reliable
Wants:
-Under 50k miles if used
-Light color interior
-Heated seats
-Proximity entry
-NA or hybrid engine with preferably 8 second or better 0-60
Nice to have:
-Something still park-able in the city

Well, no sense in moving quickly on that front. I need to figure out if it even makes sense to get it repaired or just trade it in with the damage known.Gberg2119 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2019 1:58 pmHave you taken it somewhere for an estimate yet? $500. I have rental coverage too. I'd expect this to crest over the $1k mark.
Side note: Cars are fragile. I have no idea why they can't design cars with easy/cheap to replace bumpers that can actually take a moderate bump. Like the Wrangler has. Instead, everything is painted plastic with fragile little clips and fragile plastic stuff mounted to it.

I think it's about a wash, you can try carmax and see what they have to say. But your $500 is right about the decrease in trade in i'd expect.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2019 2:51 pm$500. I have rental coverage too. I'd expect this to crest over the $1k mark.

This seems like acceptable damage to me, if you're able to take out the really obvious white scrapes by the method of polishing, then I wouldn't bother with 2 weeks of "parts ordering", then dealing with insurance etc.

A UPS truck can do a hell of a lot of damage. That poor MK6 GTI.
