:notsure: I thought you were going to try and see if premium makes a difference.
More power, but that's about it. The ECU will adjust.
BMW states straight from the manual.
Recommended fuel grade
BMW recommends AKI 91.
Minimum fuel grade
BMW recommends AKI 89.
Do not use any gasoline below the minimum fuel grade as this may impair engine performance.
If you use gasoline with this minimum AKI Rating, the engine may produce knocking sounds when starting at high outside temperatures. This has no effect on the engine life.
Obviously :wrong: and fake news. Buying a 25k vehicle and then "saving" $3 per tank seems completely :fullretard: to me the manual even states otherwise.

All that says is it'll be down on power..."impair engine performance". Which is true. It even says knocking on hot days is fine, which is :mindblown: that they say that.

87 is fine. All OEMs know that :derp: s will dump 87 in anything, warranty engine replacement is expensive otherwise.

I don't know to me this seems completely asinine, that's purposefully doing something to save a really trivial amount of money, you buy the more EXPENSIVE CAR that is DESIGNED TO RUN ON 91 or 89 (min), then cheap out and use regular fuel.

I don't think the engine will explode, but more expensive grades of gasoline have better additive packages as well to prevent carbon build ups etc, and BMW engines aren't exactly toyota motors that will last 400k miles, this is a tiny 2.slow with a baby dick turbo strapped to it for power, if you want it to last, you use good fuel, and follow all service recommendations, and use the best fuel you can find to prolong life.

That's what I'd do, but hey... that's just my 2 cents.

Can't disagree with you. But it'll probably be fine for the year or two he has the car.

Orange RWD with non-black sport seats. :plac:

Good thing it's in CA and the seats aren't heated.
This is exactly why you shouldn’t get the IA. These used bmws are insane values compared to new and other poverty vehicles in this price range. You can easily enjoy this for a small up charge over the IA and not hate yourself every time you get in to drive
Eh, it's like 50% higher cost. I don't hate the iA anyway - hell if it had available heated seats and dual zone ac I'd probably have bought one already. It's more fun than most other cars.

The ones I was actually considering buying I was targeting $11k OTD - plus 42 mpg on 87, $500/set tires, cheap insurance, etc.

11 OTD is quite :scrooge: er than the bmw. Not without reason tho.

Yep, it's slow and not orange. 1000 lbs lighter, way fewer miles, and with real bluetooth and :unicorn: Android Auto :doe:

Even though the used Bimmer represents a great value, it'll undoubtedly have higher running costs than the iA. If the move is ultimate :scrooge: that iA will be hard to surpass while still maintaining a modicum of fun.

It's only going to matter if Griff is banging off the rev limiter on a trackdaybro and really getting things hot. Car will pull timing like crazy and will be knocking hard. But for everyday derping? 87 is probably totally fine.

My next car will run on 87. This high octane stuff is pointless. The markup on it from regular keeps growing. It's like a $0.50/gal premium now.

Sooo... it says it will run fine without any effect on engine life on 87 RIGHT IN THE MANUAL. Also, it's like $10 per tank difference. Last night, for example: Regular: $2.31, Premium: $3.01. So the difference is about $500/year. Not insignificant for the poors. All of that said after giving it some thought and discussion, I'll probably just use 89. It says (implies) right there in the manual that there will be no difference in performance/engine life between 89/91.

Does it ? I pulled that quote straight from bmw.com for a 2014 model year ...
I’d try to do 89 says it is still acceptable. 87 is :fullretard: status

The :truk: gets 87 so it's typically Wawa swill for that.

:meata: I hunt out Sunoco, Shell, or some other top-tier gas station with a high fuel turnover rate. It gets filled so seldomly, I :aintcare:
The truck runs on 87.

The GTO and El Camino run on 93. The engines are 11.5:1 and 10.1:1 respectively, with the El Camino having iron heads. I usually try to fill those two up on a Tuesday when Shell knocks $.20 off premium gas.
