That’s not the base GTI. That is the equivalent to the 2017 “sport” trim which is between S and SE

2019
S
Rabbit Edition/Sport
SE
Autobahn.
From the article

"Of course, all this extra standard equipment does mean that the GTI's base price goes up. The only prices released so far are for the base S trim. The manual model starts at $28,490, and the dual-clutch automatic model begins at $29,590. That's a $1,180 increase for both trims. "

Again, this isn’t the base model.

S will have all of these features as OPTIONS.

Sad that price of entry has gone up. But that sport diff should be standard anyway, so I'll allow it.

Other fun shit on the 2019 GTI:
-228 HP standard
-GoRf brakes standard
-7-DCT trans optional

Nice updates. With the 7-DCT and extra power it's probably faster than my car.

Rudy is saying that VW dropped the "base" model GTI (using 2017/2018 nomenclature) and instead is offering the 2017 Sport trim as the lowest level in the lineup.

He's :wrong: doe because the lowest trim would be referred to as "base" trim

You also forget the 6/72,000 bumper to bumper and powertrain that would normally cost $2,500 third party to get an “extended” warranty on a 3/36,000

I interpreted KYJelly’s post as alluding to the base model being thevravbjt Edition. Crisis averted

Yea, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. Which is why most of us here got pay raises recently. Inflation is rampant

Given the cheeto put tariffs on german built R's (which are sold in NA market as well), I wouldn't be surprised.

About time VW (of USA) finally stepped up to the plate. The previous gen Polo GTI only came with 7 speed DSG, when mk7 hit the market in Europe/Turkey, the regular Golf's that are ALL equipped with auto's get 7 speed dsg, yes even the 1.2 with 80 hp. It's a shame that VW's in Murica that aren't diesel or performance oriented cars still get the ancient slushbox that VW dumped for ROW cars once mk5's hit the market.

On the flipside I never found the 6 speed to be bad performing. It also seems relatively reliable with epic genii pushing 400whp through it, which is double the design spec.

now that i think about it, I'm more :rage: at the transmission programming for mk6 and up on D, in manual mode it's decent, but thats about it.

I pretty much left it on sport mode for jetta loaners and tiguan loaner.
