WITH ALL THE ADVICE YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW?
I am going to repair the exhaust cam, get car back, and drive girlfriend's Mazda until I find a car that I can afford and like.
you are exposing yourself to all the risk with NONE of the benefits with that move. This is the 2nd stupidest thing to do behind doing this and letting your mother drive it.

A dark part of me things Crang is playing the game of his grandmother passing/inheritance so he can get his bixenons. None of this makes sense without a piece of the puzzle we aren't being told.
They aren't offering me cash and I really don't know that I want another VW! I don't see the harm in doing this!

My grandmother has no money.
Not sure if serious.
If you're going to fix the car and keep it, tow it to an indy shop, buy a used engine from www.car-part.com with a warranty (or call LKQ) and have them install it and flash it back to stock.
Do not have JD do the full repair. You'll spend 80% of what the car is worth to do it on a 7 year old tuned VW.
Buy that. It'll cost you $3k out of pocket. It's got 30,000 miles of powertrain warranty left, 6k of full warranty and you'll spend less money up front on that than you will to fix the GTI, and you'll still have no car payment.
