Both proponents of modding here, Coog's and myself acknowledged that you can absolutely go to far. A $60K GTI is way more than a $60K Porsche, Corvette, or GT350. But a $32K GTI versus a $27K GTI ($5K in mods) gets you a much more fun and unique car. My $28K is a track beast and I blow by all sorts of AMGs, Quadrigfoglios and other shit when they break on every track day, but I invested some time/money into making my car more robust, it works. With a little bit of thought and money into it, it is actually better on the street AND the track, than OEM.

Modding the 4Runner doesn’t make me want to keep it, I like my setup and I want to keep it. It’s not like I’m changing to different vehicle is the itch to upgrade, I just want a no miles version of what I already have. Theres some more in-depth mods that require some cutting that are planned, the smash or pass dilemma only effects the timeline of how soon I do them - the current vehicle from this platform or a new vehicle of this platform. The mods don’t make me want to keep it longer, the fact that it’s perfect for what I want to do does. Jeep, Bronco, Taco... they can all S a D!
And chain drive 2.0 tune issues derive more from exposing shit parts on a kinda crappy engines, but there is absolutely merit behind the claim that tuner companies don’t but anywhere near the amount of R&D into their tunes as an OEM.

That said, I think just about every member of this forum has tuned a turbo car and I don't recall anyone ever having a single issue outside of needing a clutch upgrade on a GTI, which isn't really an issue, just a component known to not be able to handle 25% more power than stock. That said, my tuned GTI's stock clutch never slipped.

I’m thinking it is. I’m starting to plan for freshening things up a bit and the next round of mods, I’m looking at dumping another 7-8K into this one, from there it should be good to go long term with the exception of gears if we do eventually add an offroad trailer.

I thought I'd give an update on this.
I kept the current 4Runner and got back to work on it. Towards the end of summer, I noticed that with very hot ambient temps and idling in a drive-thru the coolant temp would creep up over normal, not flat out overheat but it got warmer than it should. I dug into it and found pretty much 1/3 of the radiator's surface area was covered with dead grass and muddy gunk built up.
All in all, I cleaned out about 2.5 handfuls of this
Since I was in there I decided to refresh the cooling system - new OEM water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, radiator cap (not shown), fan clutch, serp belt, coolant and did plugs while I was in the engine bay
The drivers side rear spark plug had just a little bit of oil on the top of the plug
So I pulled the top apart and resealed the valve covers, the oil control ports, the VVT oil pressure feeds, spark plug tubes, intake manifold, throttle body, etc. and replaced the PCV valve
That's clean for any age, let alone 10 years and 140K
I replaced the dead clock spring (picture provided by my 4 year old, he wanted to document the replacement with his kids cam)
I knocked out a bunch of routine maintenance
-Replaced OEM front brake pad anti-rattle shims and clips
-Cleaned and lubed the front brakes
-Installed Toytec stainless steel brake lines all around
-Replaced OEM rear pads pad anti-rattle shims and slides
-Cleaned and lubed the rear brakes
-Adjusted parking brake tension
-Brake fluid flush
-Rear differential service
-Center differential service
-Front differential service
-Full transmission service
-Tire rotation
-Engine air filter
-Cabin air filter

Then it was onto a Hefty Fabworks aluminum plate front bumper with a prerunner hoop and Shrockworks lower profile trail rocker panels
pumper mounted up with a Warn winch, synthetic line, flat link, and the Bajas converted to flush mount
The bumper is technically for the facelift 5th gen so you lose turn signal/marker light housings, I used KC Cyclone amber rock lights in the recessed area that aligns with the "fangs" on the 2014+ that are the front turn signals and parking/marker lights with some Morimoto resistor packs to fix the hyperblink.
With rock chips and stress cracks mixed with the extensive hazing, I went ahead and bought new OEM lights (the smoked trail version instead of the chrome)
I even went ahead and marked the hotspot in order to align the new lights correctly to the old lights (that I had actually aligned using a headlight aligner), I know.... properly aligned headlights?! Who would want that?
With the front bumper on you need to extensively trim back the fender liners, because that's where the air intake gets its fresh air source I did a little bit of testing in some sloppy stuff and found with the trimmed liners water/mud/slop was making its way into the air box.
So I made a couple of potent boozy drinks for some liquid courage
And gave her hell
Then verified the water issue was solved

I gave my new springs time to settle, got the tent back on, readjusted ride height, and then dialed in my alignment for the final time. The rear links are only adjustable 1 full rotation at a time so you don’t have superfine adjustment, but I’m very happy with how it all came out. Almost no thrust angle in the rear, front camber is just a hair negative, more caster than stock to keep stability with the higher center of gravity, and more caster on the right to make it less susceptible to road crown. I had to torch the jamb nuts on the tie rods but got the toe spot on as well. It came out perfect.
