Reality is what it is. Ain't nobody washing their car when it's 14F out and the minute you drive it it'll end up looking just like it did before you washed it.

There was this detailer on the bimmerforums that completely blew my mind. They would spend 12 hrs and presumably $1500 sent to the customer on their car... And it would be dead in the middle of winter, so .. they would roll out this "PAINT CORRECTED" car into the slushy brown snow and I presume the customer would drive it home. Undoing it all within 15 min.

I pointed this out and got nearly banned. I make friends everywhere I go it seems.

I get throwing a coat of wax on in the fall to protect it... but then just leave it be until March :lolol:

Washing the paint constantly with all of that grit on it will do more harm than good honestly.

Leaving the salt on it causes more harm than good if it's over 20 degrees.

When it's below 20, leave it. When it warms up to 20+, at least rinse it off, and make sure you do a heavy dousing of the undercarriage. I prefer a self-service car wash with a high pressure sprayer for this, unless you have a pressure washer.

Also, don't park it in a heated garage if it's caked in salt.

But hey, you do you. :ohwell:

There is no salt here so it's not really something I'm expert in. If I ever drive somewhere with it, I always wait to be back home and then do a thorough cleaning + undercarriage clean as well.

Rinsing off salt if possible would be an absolute must IMO. I have done it every time after coming down a mountain, rain or shine.

I haven't washed the mini since October and the taco since November ... they are still "ok" garaging does wonders, but they are due in for wash after any rain hits em though. :disgust:

Can't rinse at home because all the hose petcocks need to be kept off in the winter less they freeze. And, AFAIK, car washes are closed during the winter here. But I'm not entirely sure about that. I pass a few on the way home from work. I'll check tonight to see if any of them are open. But the problem is, even if you could rinse off at a self-serve car wash, you can't dry it thoroughly enough so by the time you got a couple miles away you'd be stuck in the car because the doors would be frozen shut.

Also, I did put a coat of wax on in the fall, as I usually do, so there's that. Come early spring, it'll still be cold, but above freezing and often raining, and the rain helps to rinse off the car. When it rains I'll sometimes aim for puddles to help rinse out the wheel wells and undercarriage.

I did a ceramic coating when I bought my Rabbit. I just take it through the automated car wash, which is open year round. When springs rolls around, I'll clean the jambs, interior, and such.

I'm not even sure how the wheels are still turning, to be honest. Cars aren't built for such conditions.

Then you're also stuck driving a car you don't want to drive for 5mo

Fluid film is awesome stuff. I'm going to do the JL next fall if it's driven more.
