It's turning around, but remember that this country spent decades beating into the heads of younger generations that you needed to go to college and get an office job in order to be successful in life. So, it's not always the idea of being adverse to hard work so much as it is that the idea was never presented as an option in the first place.
This is a big issue IMO
It's an insanely huge issue.

Like I said, it is beginning to come around since colleges have started to price themselves out of being attainable, but there's a long way to go before trade schools are widely presented as a viable option to children.

If your people are that worthless, send me your next open position and I'll apply. I'll take the job for 2/3 their pay.

I'm not joking. I'm sick of hearing people complain that the "kids" around my age that they pay $100k are completely worthless... while the same people won't give anyone without a perfect record a chance. Want someone who can do things? Hire someone based on more than a piece of paper.

I inherited these people, I would have never hired them.

As soon as I get rid of them I'm only hiring seasoned professionals. I can't afford to hand hold anyone anymore and my time is needed on much more important things.

It's always someone else's fault. :rudy:

This is why that problem exists though, the "seasoned professionals" don't want to hire or help anyone else to become one of them.

Haha... well, I was forced to take these guys since I had open reqs and they had nowhere to go.... another result of the kinder, gentler HR department.

For what my team is working on, we absolutely need experience, lives are literally on the line. I can't have an Uber contractor signing off on code that could get someone killed.

I have a handful of guys that are 28-32 and if you tell them that they are messing up and need to do better they..... start crying.
I just had my annual performance review, yesterday.
My boss always comments on how I take ownership of my mistakes. I don't just shrug them off, but I don't let it bother me. I'm not fucking perfect.
I've had people look over my work, and just shake their head when I first started.
My old design manager would call me over. "What the fuck is this horseshit right here?"

People fucking crying in an office environment doe, which is already much softer than construction or trade, where you're working with your hands?
That genuinely boggles my mind.

You don't. That's exactly my point. People seem allergic to hard work these days.

FWIW almost EVERY Uber driver I've had that is doing it as a job has been a boomer or late Gen Xer. The millennials I encounter doing it seem (in my experience) to understand it's purpose.
"People" like everyone who makes big money on this forum and elsewhere?

You sit on your ass and talk on the phone all day, no?

Why destroy your body to make less money than people who sit in offices?

Right, it's just not reality.

Even people that start their own business work their asses off...work is certainly life for those people even though they don't have a "boss" or a desk to report to.
Being the boss sucks. Being your own boss is even worse as all the pressure is on you to succeed or fail at life. I've run small businesses to make a living and it is no picnic... Running them on the side is a bit easier, but still a time drain. It's very hard work and long hours that most young people today can't imagine doing. They seem to think that if you just put up a sign on the internet everyone will come and send you money, no effort required.
:dat: The small businesses I have owned and managed have been the hardest work I have ever done..... Not physically, but mentally and emotionally....... Performing a trapeze act with no safety nets 24/7 is exceedingly stressful......

That being said, no one held a gun to me head......

Mental demands can be really high. Dealing with immense stress, long hours, 60+ hour work weeks, days on end of being screamed at by superiors, I've had all of this, and it takes its toll.

Vs. being an electrician for example, sure your knees and joints are taxed, your feet will hurt, probably your fingers and whatnot...but your mind won't be too taxed. Not that the job doesn't require thought, it does BIG TIME, but you're not dealing with BS stress. Stress combined with sitting all day probably kills more people than trade work.

It depends on the environment. Electricians still have to dig trenches, haul cabling that can be several pounds per foot, etc. The mental stress really spikes when you're dealing with high voltage feeds (480+).

Crying!?!

Yesterday, my boss came by and told me a plan I put together was "complete and utter shit". I said...ok, I missed the mark, what do I need to fix? We discussed, I learned what I screwed up, and I got the job done. He was ultimately pleased and it was presented to the CEO who was also pleased.

I didn't cry, I wasn't offended, sometimes you swing and miss. That's life.

This is why I'm screwed. My entire career has been like this. I don't really know how to be gentle.
Yeah man.. it is completely foreign to me that these guys do this.

They can't do the simplest tasks I assign to them, but expect to be paid like an expert and never be told they are wrong, even in private.

I told one of them in the last 1:1 I had with him that this kind of behavior isn't professional and I'm not going to pat him on the back and make it all better. Then the waterworks were accompanied by sniffling and audible whining and whimpering.

How the hell did these guys make it out of 1st grade alive?

There is zero doubt in my mind that stress was/is a key contributor to my current medical woes.

Hard thinking/worrying trumps hard physical labor when it comes to overall damage to mere mortals. I have done both. The key differentiator is whether one can "leave work at work" or not. In most of the jobs I have had that were physically taxing, I had no "big picture" responsibilities, thus was only subjected to work-a-day stresses which ended the minute my ass hit my car seat in the parking lot.

The all encompassing, 24/7, sink-or-swim, kill-or-be-killed variety of stress is a fucking killer.

I feel completely different physically (better, healthier, etc) after leaving my old job for my current. The stress at the last one was ridiculous compared to now. It was absolutely taking a physical toll on my body...then factor in the excessive drinking as a result...and it was a bad mix.

But I just sit at a desk all day and do nothing. I'm just another :alpo: and will live to 100 without ZFG.
