I have gotten stranded twice due to mechanical failures in my life... once in a 1993 Mazda 626, and once in my 2002 C5. That's it... newer cars always limped at least.
:plac: finds v2.0: Moar gold on the crangslist
You are also mechanically inclined enough to on little stuff. I have had to push start cars many times, shift without a clutch, change tires, replaced a turbo outlet tube, etc on the fly "in the field". Most people can't do this and would get stranded more frequently if driving an old shitbox.

Yea... Most people neglect shit... until it goes and then they blame the manufacturer.D Griff wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 1:43 pmYou are also mechanically inclined enough to on little stuff. Sometimes we do dumb stuff too like drive a car home with no brakes because we can engine brake.

If towing there are so many better options out there. That one maxes out at like 5,000lbs towing.Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 12:52 pmVery good to know. I've always liked those trucks and am keeping an eye out for deals. Performance would probably be the most because I would likely tow with it frequently.Melon wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 11:57 am
Big Green was a decent beater truck, but it rode like crap and was actually a lot slower than you would think. Even with the manual, I felt I had to work the engine hard to keep up with traffic.
Also, it sucks down the gas.
Also, at that mileage there's timing chain and head gasket concers, as well as possible issues with the auto trans.
Not yuge issues, just something to be aware of.

Well, I only ever two 3k lbs, so whatever. But yea, there's better options.

I just can't kick the 911 out of my head. Always wanted one, never had one.

This is where the JT has blown my expectations out of the water. = tool has been my mantra for a while. The ZR2 was fun to drive, but kind of sucked at being a truck. The JT is not great to drive, but something as mundane as hauling a load of concrete to the recycler can be fun with the top and doors off. I drive it around with all the stuff off it just for fun constantly. ZFG crappy roads. ZFG going the speed limit. It leaves me wanting for absolutely nothing in this environment.
The other day, I was on a road with all the stuff off. I was behind a dude in a new C8, whorange like mah . 45 mph speed limit on a 4 lane road. I was admiring listening to it as it burbled at a red light. Light turns green he PUNCHES it. Tires clawing for traction, it sounded glorious as it wailed banging off shifts, easily hitting 60. I accelerate like normal, probably 10-15 bus lengths behind him when out of a side street, a cop car comes barreling out in front of me with the lights on. Dude could get a reckless driving ticket at who knows what penalty, while I just cruised by
Sports cars just blow where I live. open air is far more fun.

They’re special cars. 5/7 would recommend one at some point if you have the means.
I wish the older air-cooled stuff didn’t skyrocket. I nearly traded my WRX for a 964 but it had the early no-cylinder seals motor. Kicking myself for that a bit.

IDGAF about the cooling system, but I know it denotes an end of an era for the charm of the cars. I'd be perfectly happy with a simple base 996 TBH, but only if I lived in an area where I could enjoy it like on twisty roads or the like.
I'd LOVE a 996 Targa...I think that or a 4S would be my ideal.

Runny egg headlights be damned, 996s are my favorite.Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 2:52 pmIDGAF about the cooling system, but I know it denotes an end of an era for the charm of the cars. The headlights are ugly, but hardly a deal breaker for me. I have an affinity for things built in the late 90's, probably because those were my "dream" cars as I came of age. Every time I see a 996 with its ugly headlights and crappy interior, I just "back in the day". C5 is the same.Apex wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 2:54 pmRunny egg headlights be damned, 996s are my favorite.Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 2:52 pm

I was shopping P-cars hard then the Kamry fell into me lap.
Your other post talks about 996's
Man, get one with some miles, needs an IMS and a clutch for pennies on the dollar.
Spend about 2-3k on parts, and roll away with 300hp.

That's for any truck.
I mean, it's not a bad truck, I just had different expectations I wanted met, and it didn't meet them.
Not saying don't, just trying to let you know what you're in for.

Analog 996 dash beats any modern techno dash for me.Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 2:58 pmThe headlights are ugly, but hardly a deal breaker for me. The dash is a very good point. I don't mind the dot matrix type in the 997, but full analog is best in an older p-car IMO. A bit more timeless.Apex wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 3:14 pmAnalog 996 dash beats any modern techno dash for me.Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 2:58 pm

It's a good point, and I appreciate the input.
Reality is, I use the truck too much to rely on a beater I think. Every other week we're towing the camper at least 250 miles away with the bed nearly loaded.

996 Turbros can be had in the upper $30k to low $40k range. I can't imagine they'll ever go down much more. Would love one.

NFW Would I buy an auto 911. Need the engagement that only a can offer.
Turbros seem to be going back up in value, along with 4S. The rest seem to be pretty attainable still.
