Knew a guy who had a 2013 RS5, and he gave it its first carbon blasting after like 60k and he said it felt like it was dyno tuned before vs after.

It really is shocking how well they turn given the weight. I drove a B8.5 S4 (still my favorite… the supercharger whine was divine) and the thing that made the most difference was the active rear diff. Coming out of corners it was really impressive!troyguitar wrote: ↑Sat Jun 26, 2021 1:09 pmThe Audi multilink front suspensions from the B5 to present era work really well (better than mcstruts by far) but they wear out quickly, especially on the heavy V10, V8 and V6TT cars. That's the tradeoff for making such a nose-heavy car turn and ride well.max225 wrote:Wow the maintenance records on that thing rival my e46… two front suspension overhauls by 70k miles

Yes. I'd avoid like the plague.

Yep. Engine out. Timing chains are on the back and damn near impossible to access and this pile of is what awaits you when you get the motor out

It's the crown jewel definition of German over-engineering , you really need to want the car and have a specialty mechanic in your back pocket to make this happen.

What about an E34 or E39 540i/6? They’re great cars. The E34 is more reliable than the E39 because it’s pre-VANOS and IMO it’s aged better.Irish wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 11:47 amMan thats a beaut....RLWake wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 11:27 am

3.0T A6 is probably a dime a dozen by now. IIRC 2012+ models have the ZF8 slushbox.Irish wrote:Man thats a beaut....RLWake wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 11:27 am Here’s a better way to scratch your VAG itch

E39 is fine reliability wise. I have spent extensive amounts of time researching them, and generally they are good cars.RLWake wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 11:53 amWhat about an E34 or E39 540i/6? They’re great cars. The E34 is more reliable than the E39 because it’s pre-VANOS and IMO it’s aged better.

E39 540i m sport 6M is probably a 30k vehicle at this point though… because reasons.
Ironically the 4L are quicker than the 4.4s.
But all of them completely grenade by 175-220k miles. Due to .. wait for it .. timing chains.
Honestly I am starting to hate timing chains. They all fail … and when they do it costs more than the car to repair/replace

All timing chains. Toyota has switched from belts to chains and while they last a bit longer than the Germans the same fate is still inevitable.RLWake wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 12:03 pmDo you hate timing chains… or do you hate German timing chains?max225 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 12:01 pm

You have things like tensioners that fail but also guides are made of plastic and become brittle and fail over time due to engine heat + oil etc.
JaguarLR timing chains are the worst since they fail at 50-75k mile intervals and are incredibly difficult to fix with special tools etc. it is what makes LR horrible 2nd hand vehicles

Timing chains are intended to last forever and are usually designed as such. Clearly they don't last forever, but OEMs don't care about the 2nd or 3rd+ owners.

if this is the right thread other than the moves I may consider on the horizon. But
As some of you know, once I get back to the states I am dead set on a g20 m340i (CPO) due to ideal price range. $49k on 6k-7k miles for instance. Saddle interior with either mineral white or blooo for a real color. X-drive or RWD, doesn't matter knowing you can whip the tail out with the xdrive as well. Will get snow tires either way. Then eventually an NB miata once the upcoming spring hits, but that depends on how used cars pricing would be.
2nd option m2 comp , which will be quite a stretch, but with the downpayment I have on hand mostly from what I got from my GTI, that will land me just $110-150 dollhairs more on monthly payments than my GTI. I have mixed feelings about having that car as a daily.
Pros:
- Manual
- More fun and engaging
- More street "cred"
- Depreciates less than the m340i (holds value with the apocalypse) (which means better trade in value for my next car after that which I recently I kept my eye in... see below cons)
Cons:
- Insurance is more expensive assumingly (ie. 2 door, manual, inline 6)
- More moola on maintenance down the road, because ///M
- Racekar suspension = teeth shattering ride in my neck of the woods, not ideal for a daily
- Manual in DC traffic, though I can deal with it.
- Tad more expensive than my ideal price range although it is doable.
- Definitely would not drive it in the snow, definitely require a winter beater, though I can borrow my parents car if I need to but still a bit inconvenient.
- Outdated interior in Max's translation: Ancient.
The following move that I'm highly considering in a few years is the JL Rubicunt 392 for daily/offroad/jeep thangs, starting at $75k, NGH atleast for the next couple of years. Then perhaps a toy, like a 370z nismo, , Cayman GTS, if money isn't truly an object, fuck it and get a GT4. But I'd have to figure out what to do with picking which Cayman in particular so I can choose accordingly.

that I would be about paying $13K for a 200K mile , but I am just out of touch. $13K is the new $5K.

seems decent
Dunno, $18.5k for a 15 year old truck isn’t all that tempting to me.

Sorta ya but clean ones of that age are hard to find. And most taco owners do know what they have. Resale value is #1 for 2 with reliability as far why people buy these things.D Griff wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 4:51 amI’m getting a real “I know what I have “ vibe….max225 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 12:06 am https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/d/ ... 51163.html

You can find a GMT800 just as clean for less. That's the way to go if you want a cheaper
