The press release sucks to read so here are the highlights:

GLE350: 2.0T with 255 HP, 273 lb-ft and 50:50 AWD split on 4matic model

GLE450: 3.0T inline six with 362 HP, 369 lb-ft and 48V mild hybrid setup and variable 0-100% AWD split via multiplate clutch and torque vectoring on 4matic. Includes a starter generator (no belt!) and shifts ALL accessories like water pump, AC, etc to the 48V circuit

E-ACTIVE 48V suspension system uses AIRMATIC air suspension coupled with a new electronic damper? system to allow continually variable damper AND spring rates. The shocks also recuperate energy on bad roads, halving their power requirement. The system can counteract body sway, squat, and dive, and still ride like an S class.

The magic suspension can hop itself out of sand pits. It can also individually articulate a wheel via the touchscreen. The suspension couples with a stereo camera and the GPS to *ahem* proactively LEAN INTO TURNS like a motorcycle and softens or hardens the suspension to cope with stuff like potholes, dips, and bumps.

Plus other shit nobody cares about like power 2nd row seats and it'll drive itself at low speeds.

My God. Imagine owning this out of warranty.

I :member: hearing about 48V circuits at FCA when it was still Daimler-Chrysler. Word was that 12V systems were inherently flawed and that everything automotive was going to eventually switch over. This is the first time I'm seeing anything like it since that discussion. :neat:

:woodplow: the GLE450 as a lease under warranty if I had a money tree.

Ok, reliability of the system aside, the thing bouncing itself out of being stuck is quite :impressive:

They’ve been talking about 48v systems for at least 20 years.

Interesting active suspension tech, will be interesting to see how it plays out. Regardless, it’s nice to see manufacturers trying something different.

I am not familiar with your neck of the woods but in South Florida, when tax season is near that's when you see 10-20 year old BMW's, MB's, Audi's, etc. that get used until they :nuke: and then abandoned for repo.

Like the E39 530i I saw last week that was burning oil with a nice blue cloud following it, dented bumper, missing side trim, and only one working tail light. But it’s a BIMMER, mang.

I can if they are done right. Put a screen up and then have it only display circular fake analog style gauges? What the hell do you have a screen for in that case? Lol. Or the Golf Rs that show a picture of the car on the side that’s cool but it’s a fucking Golf TSI!!!! 🤣

It’s a killer concept and I’m sure it’s rather mind blowing to drive. Being a 1st gen German design..... lease the shit outta this.

they been talking about 48v in cars for 20 fucking years.

I dont think it will ever get commonly adopted, fully electric 400v or 800v systems will be mass market first.

I'm currently rereading my old Road & Track's from the mid-aughts before finally tossing them and in the 2004 issues, and likely earlier ones, there were articles in the Tech section about upcoming 48v stuff. Glad it's finally happening.

48 volt started in production cars a few years ago. It’ll be common place very very soon on nice cars without tiny base 4 cylinder engines. There will be a handful of systems in the car operating the 48v.
