As the only published author in a well-known motorcycle publication in the room...
Such drama!
My dad had a MK1 Rabbit when I was a kid... I always wished in high school we had still had that instead of the '93 Ford Taurus I drove .
His was a four speed earth killer diesel . I think it had like 52 horsepower at the crank or something.

The NA diesel Rabbits had a longer 0-60 time than quarter mile time. That's dangerously slow.

Interesting that a Mk6 with 4 times the hp and over 1100 lbs heavier has similar highway mileage!
It also cost a fifth as much as a Mk6 but one of your boffins will have to convert $4800 1977 dollhairs into today's dinero.

Thanks for the conversion. Agreed, it's really a pretty phenomenal deal when you compare the level of content, comfort, safety, size, and performance.max225 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:07 am$4828 is 20,070 today which is close. and today’s vehicle comes with way more shit making it a far better dealwap wrote: ↑Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:03 am

Yea tons of grandiose claims as such happen all the time. Everyone on the TDI forum is "averaging" 60mpg. I was averaging 35. Which is Basically smack down in the middle of city(30)/highway (42).

My dad had a diesel MK2 golf. Fun little car to drive around. Ran with minimal maintenance for over 300k miles, then the starter died or something. He'd had it for over 14 years, and was ready for a newer car, so instead of fixing it, he "sold" it to a family friend who needed some help for $1

That's roughly what my brother gets in his JSW TDI - about low/mid 40's on the highway.

Those early diesels were known to be pretty robust and very long lasting, simple things.

In related news, I recently talked to the guy who bought my 1999 Mk4 GTI 2.slow. It'll be 20 years old next year but it's barely pushing 100k miles . He bought it at around 85k about 2.5 years ago. He says everything still works, from the AC to the power windows to the sunroof , the only exception being the passenger ass warmer is dead. It's still on it's original water pump and there is no visible rust. It's been parked outside since 2011. over all.
