Yep. This thing is pretty ugly to me.

I thought the 318ti was a flop?
Always liked them. Imagine they would flop even harder today unless they were a small crossover or something. A BMW Crosstrek would be kinda cool, actually.

I think I still kind of "want" a 230i which is basically the poverty version of the supposedly upcoming Supra. I can't see paying $50k for that

When they were new, nobody I knew liked them. Even my friend that had an M3 and bought a 318Ti for his wife (she loved it). Now, it seems like there's a cult following for these hideous things.

Were they a flop? I saw a lot of them on the road, but we have a pretty small overall market and people like driving compact cars here.
You are correct about cars not selling, it would be suicide to build a compact sporty hatchback unless it's lifted and rolling on 20s

They were light, fun to drive, simple for a german appliance and cheap.
I guess a PP GTi fills that void today, but BMW has less appeal with all their upmarket offerings.

They're a few mods away from offering an E30 M3 experience for the cost of a Yaris. It's a car when you consider the lego-like BMW parts bin and massive aftermarket available. Kind of underwhelming in stock form unless you get a clubsport model.CorvetteWaxer wrote:When they were new, nobody I knew liked them. Just buy an E36 M3 if you want the 6 cylinder. I meant work the top end of the 4 cylinder to let it breathe/rev like the E30M3. It's got E30 rear suspension too, so at that point you have a pretty good approximation of the "greatest sports sedan of all time" for next to no money.Apex wrote:Drop a S50 or S52 in there and have a blast.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 12:24 pm They're a few mods away from offering an E30 M3 experience for the cost of a Yaris. The aftermarket isn't there for the M42 4-cyl. It was the same engine I had in my e30 ('91 318is), and it was spritely, but nothing to write home about.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 12:29 pmJust buy an E36 M3 if you want the 6 cylinder. The E30 M3 only made 192 hp, they're slow cars.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 12:30 pmThe aftermarket isn't there for the M42 4-cyl. Real world current retail pricing is more like $10k for a built 2L engine with light flywheel/clutch and tune:He was also more than willing to show us and our readers what he had learned about these interesting M42 engines.
His thought was to take our original engine and rebuild it with a lightened, balanced rotating assembly, and better cam profile.
He would bore it and use a crank from an M44 Z3 engine to give us 2.0 liters, instead of our original 1.8.
He would bump the compression up a bit, improve our breathing with his valve train tricks and then finish the whole thing off with a lightened clutch and flywheel assembly.
We could expect a completely rebuilt engine and roughly 40 more horsepower and still retain (cosmetically at least) the original engine with its great drivability and fun-to-drive nature.
So we would have a car that would give an E30 M3 fits, and be all in for $10,000-15,000 with about half that figure being in the engine.

Well, sure...one off custom shit would be cool, but I hardly call that a robust aftermarket.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 12:46 pmThe E30 M3 only made 192 hp, they're slow cars.

Everything else on the whole car is available everywhere and you only build the engine once.
You have to want to drive (drive - not own or look at, you can't see the box flares from the driver's seat) an E30 M3 more than anything else but not have $100k+ to buy one, otherwise it doesn't make sense.

Ummmm....ok. I will reserve ''judgement'' till after the M340 test. Might be a nice replacement for the M235i.
