The Jetta has to go.
1) Wifey wants kid #2, the Jetta is not able to fit 2 adults with 2 (especially rear facing) child seats.
2) Its FWD.
3) She wont leave my 4Runner alone!! Shes racking up the miles while I'm gone for work.
4) The 2012 MK6 Jetta 2.5 6 speed auto is arguably the most reliable VW product ever made, but it has been constant problems since ever since it started to sit for weeks at a time. When I'm gone for work my wife will not dive it.
We're looking for AWD, large interior space, 3rd row seating, safe, and reliable. In terms of budget I really don't want to go much north of $30K.
I'm thinking a CPO 2016 AWD Toyota Highlander, current generation but the last year of the proven solid 3.5L port injection V6 with a 6 speed auto. I don't want new so a 2018 is out. The 2017 is the first year of the new direct injection 8 speed trans drivetrain, I'm really against buying 1st year technologies if you plan to own it long term. I don't want to spend more than low 30's.
I need a new car

If outhouse means outback it’s not a 3rd row vehicle which means it’s out.

The real practical choice is a minivan, just gotta throw that out there.

Highlander is a solid option. The 3.5 is damn near bulletproof and the 6AT is insanely reliable.Dbest wrote: ↑Sun Apr 01, 2018 7:09 pm The Jetta has to go.

Before I quit Toyota I spent a decent amount of time with the new HL drivetrain and it had A very smooth and relatively problem free launch. The D4S on the v6 engine (just with different heads) was launched in 2015 with the Tacoma and was pretty much problem free from my experience with it. The biggest issue is just noisy, chirpy sounding High Pressure Fuel Pumps as they age... something Toyota fought with the FR-S for the longest time. D4S launched on the FR-S in 2012 so they’ve had plenty of experience with it as they’ve ramped it into production over the years.
Toyota’s CPO program is solid, balance of factory warranty or 12 month/12000 miles comprehensive, then 7/100k powertrain from date of first retail sale.

But really a minivan is the answer. If you’re gonna buy something sole crushing, then you might as well make it practical AF.

3 row SUVs suck
That said,
Highlander is good
Subaru Ascent is in that price range with AWD and turbo 4
Mazda CX9 could be had CPO and shouldn't suck to drive
Chevy Traverse looks half decent but IDK how the AWD system is but the truck should be reliable overall

Eh in his case ground clearance matters which is where a SUV comes in handy.[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Apr 02, 2018 8:01 amCalvinball wrote: ↑Sun Apr 01, 2018 8:52 pm The real practical choice is a minivan, just gotta throw that out there.

Minivan > CUV any day.
With a 30k budget you can get a killer minivan too.

Crossovers are basically minivans in that respect.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Mon Apr 02, 2018 8:30 amEh in his case ground clearance matters which is where a SUV comes in handy.[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Apr 02, 2018 8:01 am

Toyota Sienna - 6.6"
Honda Odyssey - 4.5"
Chrysler Pacifica - 5.1"
Subaru Ascent - 8.7"
Mazda CX9 - 8.8"
Toyota Highlander - 8"
Can't find info on the Traverse
Numbers from C&D or manufacturer websites
2" might not sound like a lot but if you're constantly driving through deep snow or want to go off road at all it will come in handy. Colorado has a lot of dirt roads. I was able to drive on most of them with the rental Jetta but can't imagine that in the snow as it had JUST enough ground clearance to occasionally scrape but not drag when I was driving it in the summer.

the man said he wanted a CUV so naturally the answer is to tell him he's and needs a like[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Apr 02, 2018 8:50 am This is replacing the Jetta doe, the 4 runner is around for that other stuff.
I like minivans, I think they can't be beat for hauling kiddos around. But I also understand why he'd want something a bit more capable, if only just, for the harsh winters and outdoor activities that CO has to offer.

We drove some things and looked at stuff over the past few weeks. We decided on a highlander but the backyard project underway we’ve decided to wait a while.
