Let's suppose you have two options.
Buying out the lease is looking like it probably won't be on the table. 10 months to save the $29k it would take to purchase the STi at lease-end is probably going to be too much to ask while we're also paying for daycare. And I'm not doing two car payments.
So, out of those two above, what would you choose? If it's the latter, what should I get? I was looking for a ZHP or E90 330i, but they're s and impossibru to find. Part of me would also prefer something a bit newer that hopefully wouldn't require as much attention as either of those two. GTI Sport is creeping up the list, but I'm worried about not having enough room in the back for baby crap. Budget is probably around $22k tops so we can have it paid off before we'd need to upgrade the RDX.
And...go.
- Enjoy the next 22 months driving an STi, then face the possibility of being stuck driving a 2012 RDX.
- Get out of the STi now for something cheaper that you could continue to drive after that 22 month period is up.

It's the best Porsche red. Don't get me wrong I like Guards but goddamn is Arena a pretty color on 993s.Apex wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 9:54 amThat is one of the very few red's that I like.fledonfoot wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 9:14 am
This should end up well into the 300s with the BAT premium that seems to exist, but the fact it has the left front painted and is missing the original seats from the window sticker is only going to hurt.
We have an Arena Red Turbo S with ~12k miles in storage at work. One day, that thing’s going to sell for an insane number.
Also, I wish Turbo Twists were directional. It bugs me that they’re not.

Here's my fear. With kiddo #1 set to be here in 6-7 weeks, my wife and I have always talked about wanting two kids and she seems pretty dead set on having them fairly close together so she can be done being pregnant essentially as quickly as possible. The means kid #2 could be on the way right around the time the lease is up and, also having two dogs plus needing to haul baby crap, we'll need a 7 passenger or a... :gulp: ...minivan. With my aversion to car payments that would leave me with the RDX until the family hauler is paid for. Under ideal circumstances we'd take these next 22 months to save for the family hauler and just pay cash, but we have ~$29.6k left on a loan for the bathroom renovations that we're trying to get knocked out as quickly as possible. I think that'll take us about a year, which only leaves 10 months to save for a car under what is probably a fairly rosy scenario. I may have an idea of what our budget should look like once the kid comes and once we get hit with daycare expenses, but I don't really know.

Forgot to mention, can't really have exterior dimensions much (or any, preferably), bigger than the STi. I haz a tiny garage.Apex wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:30 amBuy the SS offcoogles wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:23 am Let's suppose you have two options.

GTI has a bigger back seat area but trunk is a lot smaller with seats up. The Impreza/WRX/STI is a rather large-ish car really. Should be fine for hauling kiddo plus 2 doges around. It'll be hard with 2 kiddos plus dogs for sure. I don't see how switching to a GTI or other 4 door sedan makes sense vs your current 4 door sedan.coogles wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:23 am Let's suppose you have two options.

Your current stable is fine for your upcoming scenario.
I'd keep the STI and ride the lease out. Don't purchase at end. Get into something cheaper afterwards. Aren't you going to take a bath on the lease if you get out of it?

Current stable is totally fine for 1 kid. And we'll really only need 1 trip car once we do have kiddo #2.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:36 am GTI has a bigger back seat area but trunk is a lot smaller with seats up. I think a GTI would be just fine as far as people space, I'd really just need space to haul them around town/to daycare/etc. Question is whether not it'd be able to haul the stroller/bags/etc. I know they'll fit a regular stroller, but enough crap for 2 little kids? Yeah I don't know. Neither the STi or GTI would haul 2 kids and both dogs, but I wouldn't need to...the 7 passenger would handle those duties.
I bugged a dealer a couple hours away about a GTI Sport and they came down $21.9k. Offered $32k on the STi trade. STi is also more expensive to insure, register, and put fuel in. So $10k plus operating cost differences is real money, fam. Residual is $27k (plus taxes), so that's $5k left to depreciate plus the payments I'm still on the hook for. It's total bath compared to the equity I dumped in, but either way you look at it, that money is gone. Either way, the STi isn't staying once we have kid #2, it's just too much money.

Honestly not a bad price and offer you got there. If you want a GTI this is a nice way to get one. I just don't see that as much of an upgrade or change from where you're at. But sounds like you just need the 2 car seat carrying capacity and the heavy lifting will be done by the mommobile.coogles wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:53 amCurrent stable is totally fine for 1 kid. STI is more expensive to own, yes. It depreciates less theoretically though, so total ownership cost isn't too far off. Lease doe. IDK.
I guess, you're not making a terrible move here.
I do think the STI trunk is bigger than the GTI cargo area, so maybe borrow a friend's stroller and throw it in there to see how it handles it before signing on? Also make sure you have room for rear facing seats. I think GTI will be fine for this though.

You've been drinking the GTI for a while now, and you have a good offer on the table, why not get it? You clearly have the ability and it'll lighten your finances for when kid it.
6 year warranty brah. If it's a pile it's not going to cost you anything for 6 years.
Other car you could consider is a Civic Si. Should hold value better, has a much bigger trunk, etc. Read about some issues with the 1.5T getting gas in the oil but who knows if it's actually a widespread problem or not. I'd probably spring for the 100k powertrain warranty extension though.

Well. You know my stance on this. I'd get the extendo warranty because seems you're keeping this for the long haul with the cheerio throwers and barfers in the back seat. Or get a 7.5 with the longer b2b.

7.5 isn't worth the price difference, IMO. $21.9k with 7k miles versus $30k for the SE? That'll pay for a lot of repairs. Plus there's no way to get the performance pack without getting the terribad MK7 sunroof design.
I'd just keep things the same, honestly.coogles wrote:
Buying a new car for a scenario that may be the case one day seems silly. What if you have kid one and decide you only want one, or it's a lot to handle so you want to space them out? Now, if you'd rather drive a GTI than the STI, and bank some money, why not?

Totally valid points. Most of the time I think I'm happier in the STi, although there are definitely times I wish the car would calm its and behave more like a "normal" car. I did the and depending on whether you use an estimated private-party value or trade-in value of the GTI in 22 months (not that I'd be looking to sell it), the costs remaining on the lease come out right in between the two, so at least over the near term there's no real financial difference or, at least it's within the noise of reasonable assumptions.D Griff wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 12:24 pm I'd just keep things the same, honestly.

$21.9k on a GTI Sport is territory. I bought mine at $24.5 + tax back in august of last year and that was still $6500 off MSRP.
You still get the 60k mile warranty on the important stuff on the Sport, and most of the shit that is covered by a 3 year, 36k mile basic warranty either fucks up early, or goes bad well over 80-100k/5-6 years later when coverage is a moot point.

Is it CPO at least?
