Because ... I'll share a positive story.
I borrowed a leaf blower from a friend who lives near my new house yesterday. As I was driving back to my place, I saw a little rolling cabinet on casters on the side of the road. It has a stainless top, so I'm like, free work bench for the new carport/shed. I pull over and the homeowner comes out, he's a dudebro about my age, and offers to come help me load it. It becomes apparent it won't fit in the 328i and he' asks if I live close. I say right up the road and he's like, let me get my truck out and I'll take it over for you. He pulls a mint '84 Silverado out from around back and drives the thing over to my house for me. The was bought new by his grandpa in 1984.
5/7 experience.

I've been saying this has been coming for 2 years now. Gas is cheap, we've swung back to and and :herewego:

At this point, I just hope the industry survives long enough to see all the olds pushed out.
Plus, the industry needs the old guys to stick around. They have the experience and the younger guys will just screw up everything they've worked for and planned for, forever.

I should have said "the industry as we know it". The way things are going, this next downturn will likely thin the heard significantly. Vehicles are already getting more and more commoditized, and with all of these different brands struggling for attention, there will be blood.D Griff wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 12:14 pmI don't see how anything other than this is possible? Even autonomous pods would still have to be manufactured and sold. Those are extremely far off anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see the emergence of a few massive "mobility" conglomerates that take the industry forward while all the smaller brands are either absorbed or dissolved. The start is the PSA/FCA merger. Next, I bet Nissan/Renault/Mistubishi will take their "alliance" closer to a merger...and it wouldn't surprise me if they (they new PSAFCA or Nissan/Renault/Mitsubishi) manage to eat up someone like Mazda or Subaru. I wouldn't be shocked to see Ford and VW merge since they have a number of alliances, and when that happens it could force BMW, MB, and the Tata group (Jag, Land Rover) so start talking about "synergies".

It all depends. The people that positively contribute with years of experience are valued. But there's too many still around that have been beaten down too much to add any real value. Just a bunch of "we've always done it this way" and people who thrive off politics and worthless corp garbage.CorvetteWaxer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 12:33 pmDon't look now, but you're officially an "old".Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 12:12 pm

I am bordering on old I've noticed young people work quite differently from me.

I did this once for someone. We left an old desk on the curb, and a lady and her daughter stopped to look at it. Her daughter was all excited to get it in her room, and they were trying to maneuver it into a Sonic hatchback when I came out and mentioned that they might want a different vehicle and I'd gladly hold it for them if they wanted. She said "oh, we just live a street over, we'll be fine if it hangs way out". My truck was parked right there in the driveway, so I offered to take it over for them. They were so appreciative, and it took me MAYBE 10 minutes total out of my day. Felt good.

It really is, and I find it super But it's somewhat necessary due in large part to the highly capital intensive nature of the business. I'm trying to influence decisiveness however I can, but it's immensely challenging with so many people that prefer the wait and see approach.[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 1:00 pmThis industry is so reactive it's retarded.Detroit wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 12:12 pm

Stuff got really expensive. How much does a CX5 lease for now? They aren’t exactly cheap.[user not found] wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 12:09 pmDetroit wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 11:49 am
Probably won't make you feel any better, but this is industry wide right now. Full blown everywhere. I'm really glad that I'm far from the sales side in my current role.
What's the most is that everyone knows the car biz is cyclical, yet when the cycle starts to turn down, everyone loses it.

It's nothing special, a cabinet on casters with a stainless top. I think it's actually meant to be a sort of floating kitchen island, but whatever. I'm all about recycling/not buying new shit currently. is also a benefit. I will likely still get some kind of rolling tool cabinet as well
Last I was comparing some things adjusted for inflation, compact cars and sporty cars are actually cheaper now than in the 1990s.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 1:47 pmStuff got really expensive. Depends on what you are using as a reference. Tons and tons of people have been left behind by the "recovery" in the past 10 years. Only around 30 million Americans have "good jobs" with solid incomes and benefits today and ~half of employed Americans are straight up poor.

Yeah I guess it depends on if you're measuring inflation by the cost of goods/services or by wages. The former certainly seems to be outpacing in most cases.troyguitar wrote: ↑Mon Dec 09, 2019 2:02 pm Depends on what you are using as a reference.
