House isn't free. But go ahead and think whatever you want to I guess.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:36 pm~$100k household with a free from Mom and everything you could ever dream of within walking distance full of brotherly love seems like it would be enough for plenty of happiness. Her parents loaned her the money for the house. It's paid back like a mortgage would be, with 4% interest. My rent contributes to paying it off. If/when I marry her, we'll have to figure out what we're doing with it. Buying it from them or leaving it.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 3:21 pmI swear you said that her parents bought the house for her.

yea, you pay some small rent IIRC but the GF lives for free to pursue her nonprofit dreams.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 3:15 pmHouse isn't free. But go ahead and think whatever you want to I guess.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:36 pm

That's a lot less status. Housing is fucking expensive.

Yea, but unlike a bank, missed payments won't likely result in foreclosure.

It helps. When she was starting the shop up there were a few months where no payment was made. But yeah, house prices are astronomical here for no good reason, and this house kind of sucks. Really don't know what to do when that time comes.

Seems like a great opportunity to cash out with some equity. Especially since it sounds like the area has been going nuts. Probably have quite a bit of opportunity in that thing.

I guess you'll at least get the benefit of massive appreciation in the current which is a fuck ton of cash.
Maybe the way to go is to get a building that can have the coffee shop downstairs and your apartment upstairs, then get a world-saving job after you've saved the down payment for it.

A) that never 'saved' people much money altho white ppl are all like "MAH INTEREST DECUCTION!!!!11!1111!!!!!eleven!!"
B) No one really qualifies with the new tax plan; the vast majority of americans will be living that standard deduction lyfe.

Depends on the price. When you're in a $150k place, the standard deduction will pretty much always be better now but in a $1.5M place it would have likely still helped to itemize.
The new system actually helps home owners in most of the country where housing is still affordable. The higher standard deduction will reduce our federal income tax liability by quite a bit. It only hurts people in really expensive places.

even you living the DINK life on you halfmillion dollar palace likly wont make over 24k dollars in interest payments that would result in itemizing to clam the deduction. (24k isthe new married std deduction IIRC)

I should look into it a bit more, but I recall that the amount I wrote off last year on our $320k house would have been negated by the standard deduction.troyguitar wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 3:43 pmDepends on the price. Now that we're in our $420k house, that might be a bit different.

That. The higher standard deduction really is a tax cut for middle class and poor folks.Big Brain Bradley wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 3:46 pmeven you living the DINK life on you halfmillion dollar palace likly wont make over 24k dollars in interest payments that would result in itemizing to clam the deduction. We'll be close between interest and property taxes.
