That's the biggest issue with non profit jobs. You take them because you believe the cause, not because you want to make money. These orgs are seriously resource constrained (as you know), so they really can't afford to pay a lot. Fortunately, there's enough people that DGAF so the orgs keep running.
They're a large nonprofit though. They do $50MM of food distribution a year, and have a $15MM operating budget. Thought there was a chance at a decent living salary. Not that I can't live on less than half of what I make, but it's a pretty serious downgrade and would require some life changes.
I've talked to a few non profits for marketing/fundraising work and it's always incredible how little they have to spend. Those operating budgets must be all going to the top.

Somewhat of an existential battle...money or doing good in the world.

That did indeed help.

Still no idea on the subjects, and I'm aiming to keep it that way. I know of them, but no idea the references.

Exec Director and COO each make about $130-150k. So it's not exactly going to the top.

Once a year, the sales team on our sister company who we share the building with cooks us a pancake breakfast as a "thank you" for the support we give them throughout the year.. Forgot that was this morning, so I had my normal breakfast (protein and peanut butter), and brought all my food for the day still. My first meal that I eat here is "breakfast food" (eggs, oats, egg whites, turkey bacon, banana, veggies) so I just ate that with the pancake breakfast from the other company. Fucking full :fatty:
Full meal was:
My food:
3 eggs
2 cups oats
1 cup egg whites
Banana
Veggies (mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers)
Their food:
3 pancakes
2 sausage links (maybe turkey, couldn't tell since I just threw it in with my scramble)
2 pieces bacon

They brought out fruit, OJ, and coffee too.. but I didn't feel like any of that.

Sounds like you and are in similar income situations...and at least for me, it's really hard to move jobs. I'm quick to forget how few jobs pay what I'm accustomed to, and it's a really hard reality check when looking for a new job. I think that's how companies with shitty cultures get away with shitty cultures.

Did you ask if they pay out bonuses? If a non-profit has excess cash left at the end of the year, do they pay out bonuses?
