I've talked to a few non profits for marketing/fundraising work and it's always incredible how little they have to spend. That's the biggest issue with non profit jobs. You take them because you believe the cause, not because you want to make money. These orgs are seriously resource constrained (as you know), so they really can't afford to pay a lot. Fortunately, there's enough people that DGAF so the orgs keep running.
Somewhat of an existential battle...money or doing good in the world.
