Yep, they play through the Sonos app...they seem to act exactly like other Sonos speakers, but we really dig the design.

Good to know about Costco. That's a decent discount, but can save $70 from that by buying two Ikea ones. :scrooge:

It's an interesting move from Sonos. The company must be struggling and needs to expand into the low end of the market. Working with Ikea is an interesting way to expand possibly without tainting the brand.
:dat:

Sonos at one time owned about 95% of this market and now has around 80%. That said, the market is growing. I'm sure they're doing fine, but they were the only known game in town and now there's quite a bit of competition. We actually have our own product we manufacture called Autonomic which competes in that space but is only sold through the custom integrator market. Paersonally I think that Yamaha MusicCast is dope and would likely go in that direction. Sonos is definitely nice though, and it's nice to see some lower cost options as they lose market share. Margin on some of their stuff must be wild, like 80+ points.
:notbad:

Technically I'm on the pro side but my company is the largest manufacturer/distributor in the home AV space so hit me up if there's anything you need to know.

Yeah, I think they need to really push to be able to penetrate the cheaper market where people can't/won't pay $500 for a fairly good speaker (play:5), or $150/$199 per speaker for the smaller units (Play:1, One) that have all the connectivity features. Hell, pretty sure even only a few months ago Detroit was plenty happy with an assortment of "dumb" bluetooth speakers. I am willing to bet that a larger percentage of the people out there are in that same camp. $40 cheap speakers are "fine" in their minds. I mean, it took me about 3-4 years to make my wife understand the value of a good speaker setup. She just didn't care and 20 years ago thought my Klipsch reference speakers were just bigger versions of the Dell speakers on her computer at work.

Sonos is hitting pretty good though, I would say they are about 75% complete with a good plan. Adding more direct play to Sonos in apps will help, it's already nice in things like Podcast apps and Spotify where you can control it from the service's app and don't need to use the Sonos controller app. If I never had to use the Sonos app and every app on my phone/tablet would just give me an option of "Play on Sonos" and pick my room, that would be perfect.

After living with them for a few days, I'm a bit meh.

A few years ago, Vizio got into the smart speaker WiFi game. It didn't go well, and we found these "Crave 360" speakers at Costco for just over $100 a year ago. They're WiFi and work with Google Assistant/Home. We eventually bought 3 of them and put them all over the house, assigning them to rooms through Google Home. We have a few Google homes throughout the house, and we got used to saying "Hey Google, play Metallica in the Kitchen"...Google home also let you bundle speakers, so you could say "Hey Google, play Metallica on the first floor" or whatever. It worked awesome.

The last few months, a few of the speakers seemed to be having connection issues. They would just randomly cut out, which got annoying. I assumed it was the old tech form the now defunct Vizio audio brand, so we started considering a replacement.

We bought the Sonos speakers from Ikea because they a.) sound better b.) look better and c.) hoped they'd connect more reliably. All of that has proven to be true, but we've had to adjust how we use them. They won't bundle with our other google home speakers, so we have to keep them separate...which will mean buying more eventually. Voice control through Google home is spotty at best. While Google will let you bundle speakers in the Home app, Sonos makes you do it on the fly in the app. Which I guess is fine, but I got used to just tapping the speaker group I wanted music to play on, not adding them individually every time.

I honestly preferred the previous Google home experience to the Sonos one. I'm somewhat considering returning or selling the Ikea Sonos speakers and looking for a more reliable speaker that works with Google Home like the Vizios did. Wife loves the way the Sonos looks, but when I got home I caught her yelling at Google because it wasn't playing the music she wanted on the speakers she wanted "These things are fucking dumb" she yelled...but conceded that she loved the look and the sound.

I fucking HATE bluetooth speakers. I've pretty much given away or thrown out all of our bluetooth garbage. I'm addicted to WiFi speakers, but the experience has to be there.

I agree 100% with your last paragraph. I really hope Sonos continues to develop play in other apps and Google Home, but I'm not optimistic. That reduces their control over the experience, but I'm really not a huge fan of the Sonos app. I also want more advanced grouping capability, which Google already does.

Why not just get Google Home Max boxes? Personally I find voice control in the home :disgust: but can't deny the convenience.

If I still work here I will probably just :troywax: on Triad speakers for the house and do a legit install because our employee pricing is true dropped cost and I like nice speakers... we will also have access to Klipsch in a few weeks.

Just one of those things that many women don't care about... my woman likes :fancy: kitchen gadgets when I think the basics are fine, I like shit that sounds good and goes fast. She actually really enjoys the powered studio monitors I have in our apartment living room now though, after being hesitant to have larger speakers, she will definitely acknowledge a huge increase in sound quality over a BT speaker/the TV built ins.

I know that I'm :wrong: but I'm pretty happy with my small 2.1 setups with ~5" mains and a 10" sub. If I want to hear it in the kitchen then I just turn it up. :science:

I thought about getting 8s instead of 5s and a sub for the "studio" i.e. office but it seemed like they'd still be better with a sub. I haven't really tried them though. It's surprising how good the simple 5" monitors sound with the :scrooge: Monoprice sub.

One of these years I'll set up a good live studio with some :fancy: big monitors to host jams. It's been way too long since I played with a band.

My audio setup is pretty ghetto. I was too lazy to run wires around the room so I just stacked everything next to the TV. The only problem I have is that for some reason if I use the SXM or Spotify TV app there seems to be no signal going to the subwoofer, but YouTube or cable are fine. I'll have to try BT streaming from my phone too as I can't remember if that worked. I also have four Yamaha 12" loud speakers in the garage. Image

I did find this for my office. It’s a factory blue print for the 1986 E30 Coupe. I picked out the frame with a touch of the Bavarian blue for flavor.

For what we use them for...glorified sound machines...absolutely.

These Ikea Sonos speakers sound fantastic for $100. I honestly don't think we'd notice a 3x improvement by spending 3x more.

You guys would rather stab your eardrums with a dull knife than listen to these poverty Sonos abominations, I know, but they're great as background music for us.

Just "tuned" them with my work iPhone and I'm even more impressed.

Can anyone recommended me a small Bluetooth receiver with a female 3.5mm in it? I want it so I can have my phone on my work table with my and not next to my stereo, and so I can charge my phone and still listen to music.

I've tried a few cheep ones from amazon with decent success for the exact use you're describing. None stand out as spectacular :doe:

If you have WiFi, I'd recommend a Chromecast audio if you can still find one. Gives you much better range and seems to be more reliable to me. My bluetooth receivers seem to like to cut out constantly.

No WiFi out in the shop unfortunately. I really only needs 5-6ft of range, but I'd pay $30-50 if it would be reliable.

So I bought some useless junk recently...

Yea, just try a thing on amazon. That's what I've done in the past, I've had a few and they seem to all be adequately mediocre.
