FWIW you don't light the gas, you just spray it on with a garden sprayer. It's an effective weed killer that is way cheaper than Round Up or similar.

One to one ratio or ...?

Also, does it have to be Dawn or is any dish soap ok?

One gallon of vinegar
One table spoon of soap
My mother in law also puts about half a cup of salt in which does seem to be more effective but I don't use it.

It can probably be any soap, just something that can cut through oil.
:notbad:
Thanks for the tip!

Back in the 70's this was not really on the popular radar in my hood. People also routinely poured it down the nearest sewer. But I did stop because of the groundwater thing.

Should be about the same price and non-toxic
It's supposed to be toxic, the goal is to keep all life out of the area in question.

I need to try vinegar and soap. I bought some vegitation killer at Home Depot that has done absolutely nothing. It was pricey AF and worthless.

Vinegar and soap sounds more promising.

I've also had terrible luck with weed barrier. We have a bunch of it in areas around the house and grass and weeds grow through it ZFG.

Dang. We've had great success with it.

Vinegar and soap works great on hot days. So wait for one like that.
Noted.

I tried using the chemical shit when it was 95 out and super dry. Figured that would do it, but a week later, everything I treated is still going strong.

I may have missed the post but if you're clearing an area, why not burn it out with a tarp? That kills everything, seeds and all, in a couple weeks with zero effort. Then you sand and stone swap it with weed fabric and you have a growth barrier.

Long term solution.
Tarp?

Tarp?
Or plastic sheeting. Basically you want to heat up the ground and burn everything out.
Got it.

Shitty. I couldn't tend to it at all last summer while recouperating from my surgery so a lot of it died. I'm working on a different area this year that is looking ok. I'll get back to the section from the pic next year, or maybe I'll put down some seed later in the fall.

Apparently vinegar and dawn dish soap is effective too, per :[user not found]:
I know this is old, but I've done this trying out things to get away from spending money on Roundup.
TLDR: Roundup works better because it gets absorbed in the plant and gets taken to the root and kills it there. Vinegar and dawn kills what's on top by smothering it but it grows right back a week later.

That's the point of the Dawn, to make it stick to the leaves and suffocate it. But it only kills what's on top. Give it a few days and what's under starts to grow through it and take the dead shit's place. The DIY method also uses Epsom Salt. And the problem with that is that it kills all of the life underneath the soil (but not the plants). Shit like earthworms and good stuff. This is just what I remember off the top of my head from researching it a while back. But I've done both and go back to Roundup since it works for longer periods. The hippy-do DIY works for about 2 weeks, but it just comes back. Roundup works for a few months at a time. I wanted to do it without chemicals, but in this case the chemicals worked better.

Couldn't $300/mo fund a setup like that within a couple of years? I guess that shit all costs more than I think since I don't care about rocks/plants. I'd be cool with gravel covering the property, then using gasoline to kill/prevent weeds.
I don't know the precise cost of something like this. Rocks and mature cactus in particular are not free doe. TBH, it's just something I'd address if I had more time....it seems like household stuff goes pretty slow for us.

Your gravel and gasoline idea, while humorous is, :gtfo: The above is sort of a Scottsdale/Sedona "magical desert" type situ, what you are suggesting....flat gravel...adds an element of poverty and despair to someplace already too hot. Your gasoline idea would likely draw some comments from the HOA.
When we moved to texas we bought a house in a developing subdivision. We were among the first 50% of houses I think in that specific area. My mom wanted a desert landscape front yard. She went down to a construction site and asked the guys to bring up 2 boulders they had blasted up. Dude jumped in the front end loader and said whichever ones you want $20 each. Drove em up the street and plopped them in the front yard. Dad was very :wtf: when he got home that day :lolol:
