Deck project started. 36” deep footing holes dig and inspected.

Will be way overbuilt, thanks to code requirements, but will be nice to finally have a space right off the kitchen sliding door for entertaining/relaxing.

Footings get placed Sunday, framing happens the following Sunday.
BUT WHAT ABOUT DRAINAGE

I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE.

No negative impact on drainage. Will be throwing 3/4" gravel down underneath the deck itself, and the deck surface will have a 1/4" slope away from the house.

My guess would be that Chris took some time off because he has read the dialogue on this page 1,345 times and decided to spend some of his free time doing something besides beating a horse to death.

for future reference, HD rents augers for fairly cheap. You can dig all those holes in about 10 mins. Saves a ton of effort. Im spoiled with having one on hand for free tho.

Only 4 holes - was way easier to just dig than deal with coordinating equipment rental.

If I was doing a fence, I'd rent an auger fo' sho.

FYI Municipal codes vary.....but by not attaching my deck to the house, I saved $200 in permit fees and did not have to have anything but a final inspection.

How was the digging? Mine was terrible. Shale all day. My neighbor had a fence put in professionally right before I did the deck. The ground killed the contractors Auger, they ended up digging the holes by hand.

Digging was easy. 3 holes went right down, one hole the last foot was clay and sandstone which was a bit of a bitch but a few hits with a sledge on the shale bar and it broke up.

Cool on the digging. I would really like to add a small elevated deck at pool height but the digging and permit process (extensive when it abuts a pool) is intimidating me to :nope: out of it.....

You planning on using nails or screws?

I’ve got wood.

Lowe’s messed up the order in my favor. Looks like carpentry projects are on the menu, boys!

Also, tarp is not there to keep things dry - trying to dry tarp out. We're gonna need a bigger tarp.
