Downstate, we stumbled upon an old French fort, called Ft. Chartres, originally built in the early 1700's, that was eventually taken over by the British before being abandoned and eventually rebuilt by the state in the 1930's.

We spent the next night-thursday-on Carbondale, a big college town where SIU is. The campus was pretty nice, but kinda dead so I didn't take any pics.
We got to the first park the next morning. Behold the Little Grand Canyon:

Forgot to mention, I got lost for about a half hour in the Little Grand Canyon. The trail was very poorly marked and I lost it once or twice a couple times until I lost it for good. Since I was at the bottom of a little canyon I decided to just keep climbing uphill until I hopefully found the trail or a road. It took a solid 30 minutes of climbing up steep slopes, wet, slippery rocks, felled trees and tangles of roots and saplings until I finally reached to top of a crest and found the trail.
