So the trip was 1105 miles, pretty much on the dot. Burned just over 32 gallons of 87, which equates to ~34.5 mpg, with 2 people, a trunk full of bags and a case of water, and the AC on every day with temps in the low 90's. Totally :notbad: imo. Almost makes up for the smaller gas tank vs the Mk6. MFD had it at 35.4 mpg so it's almost accurate, within 2% or so, so less :wrong: than I was expecting.

The good:
The adjustable hatch floor was handy. By dropping it to it's lower setting we were able to put our carry-on's in standing up, which really maximized space.
The 7th gear in the DSG is a legit overdrive gear. 2k rpm at 75 mph. :notbad:
The LED headlights are fanfuckingtastic. Beyond :impressive:
This car got better mileage on 87 than my Mk6 got on 93, likely at least somewhat due to the tall 7th gear. :nice: Curious to see what it'll do on 93.
IT's also noticeably more powerful and quick than the Mk6.
The AC worked better than the 6.
The MQB platform is noticeably more solid and quiet than the PQ35, and being lighter is :like: , too.
It handled twisty roads really well. Turn-in was better than the Mk6, with less drama overall. Likely 40% MQB and 60% real LSD. Maybe 30-70? :iono: but noticeable improvement.

The meh:
The seats, while having nicely more aggressive side bolsters, are for some reason not quite as long-distance comfortable as the seats in the Mk6. Close, maybe 95-98% as good as the Mk6, but I found myself starting to figit after about 4 hours behind the wheel, which pretty much never happened to me in the 6.
Sport mode in the 7speed DSG isn't quite as aggressive as in the old 6 speed. Which isn't a terrible thing necessarily, but the 6 shifted more intuitively in the twisties. I had to help it a little more on this trip, but I mostly used M mode as I usually do.
No more DSG farts. :(
I really wish VW put in something better than their poverty HU. I miss the CD player and an AUX input. One or 2 extra USB ports would have been nice, too.
There were SEVERAL times driving on rural, unmarked country back roads when I could have used a compass. :rage:
The stock Bridegstone Potenza's are kind of loud on the highway and I look forward to replacing them when they wear out. Probably with Conti DWS006's.
While the AC was decently powerful and effective, I do find myself missing the Climactic system in the Mk6. Not full Climatronic but I liked Climactic and found it worked pretty well. I believe VW killed it for the 2012 model year.

Oh, and Android Auto was a whole bunch of :whocares: I ended up disabling it and using Maps on my phone and listening to shit via Bluetooth. I'll probably delete the ap off my phone.

That's pretty much all I've got for now. If I think of anything else I'll update here.

Oh, another thing.
The drive modes are a bit :butwhy: imo. I just use custom and adjust everything to sport with the Soundaktor set to eco, which seems to be it's quietest setting. Otherwise, Eco and Comfort modes are just dumb. Getting mid-upper 30's in basically Sport makes eco worthless, and why would you want Comfort mode in a GTI? It's already pretty comfortable.already. I'd MUCH rather have the better HU, or even a fucking compass, than these dumb adjustable settings.

It's funny, I liked the car from the get-go, but it took a little road trip to get this thing to grow on me and it's starting to feel like "my" car. :megusta:

I am pretty pleased with the mpgays on this car, especially considering it's on 87. For my regular commute (12 miles/day) I'm getting upper 20's, like almost 29, with the AC on almost every day. Really :notbad: at all. As soon as gas dips again I'll buy a tank of 93 to compare.

Oh, I should also note that the first 30 minutes of our trip last week I performed an Italian tune up. Did 75 mph for 30 minutes in 4th gear, once the oil temp got up to 180* or so. It was around 3600-3700 rpms, iirc, and was getting an indicated 30.1 mpg.

Leave it in the car so you remember next time you bring it in for service. It requires some obscure torx bit to change.

They were probably supposed to change it for him but forgot. And instead of calling wap and having him bring it in and burn :dillerman: money paying a tech to do it, they just paid the few bucks postage to send it to him and call it done.

My :gorf: is missing the 7th DSG gear, that setup is legit and I'm :jelly: of the 87 fills. It is a $20 difference per fill up bring me down from $60-65 to $45 in a GTI, not earth shattering but over 10 years is $5k! I'm going to only consider commuter cars that take 87 next go around, that's too much $$ to ignore.

Your :gorf: doesn't have the 7sp DSG?

Yea my fillups are rarely over $30-$35 any more. I was easily spending $38-$45 to fill up the Mk6. :disgust:

GTI is the sweet spot, and wins handily over the Arr when :scrooge: :math: is applied to the bigger equation. The only counter argument really is the AWD which I feel that I sometimes use and enjoy....but not to the point where I can't live without it. I'd definitely pick up the blue meanie spec GTI if I were in the market for a 4dr hatch today.

I think they came up with the 7spd DSG in 2018 or 2019, my car sits a little higher in the RPM range on the highway then I like, it's my only beef since it is what it is and I knew I wasn't buying a fuel miser when I got it.

Perhaps you should consider a Peterbilt 389.

This is really cool. A big tank should be an option on anything that isn't a sports car.

Same for sure. That's why I was :disappoint: that the Mk7 tank shrunk by over a gallon. That's also why I was :fuckyeah: that the wife's H has an 18.5 gallon tank.

Still, I'm getting roughly (almost) the same range with the Blue Meanie on 87 as I got on the bigger-tank Mk6 on premium which is :notbad: at all.
