Got me before the edit, but it's been a year since I sold my C5 and haven't replaced it. I'm in no rush to either.

No matter what anyone else tells you, it will be SIMILAR. A F56 is a bit more refined but it is no NIGHT AND DAY OMG YOU"LL DIE in THE R GEN difference some forumbros claim.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 4:05 pmIn northern MI, it's really a concern of craters and overpasses. How are your freeways? lots of overlapping concrete ? Craters? Overpasses?Bridges ?
Those are the things that kill the comfort level on the mini. The refinement + road noise mitigation is excellent in the mini, but the stiff springs+ short wheel base create the issue.
It is also not a HUGE BEHEMOTH of a car either. This is about as SMOL as it gets.. the wheelbase issue is the biggest one... it makes handling amazing... because you're arm length away from any wheel... but it also makes uneven pavement JUMPY... Sometimes you fly up in your seat when you're going over a big expansion joints...
will bounce... will confirm.

No, I just mean I don't buy and sell cars with the frequency that I used to, and I don't really have much interest in it anymore.
If I buy a fun car, it's going to be around for a while, so I need to be a bit more picky. I'd love to have something that's fun on twisty roads with decent highway manners that's easy on gas. Right now, I'm thinking something like a JCW MINI or a 500 Abarth. Abarths are cheap AF, so they're probably the leader.
Nice thing is if you buy cheap used cars, it's not that bad of a proposition.

An S with the 18s and non sport suspension would be fine. Similar to a GTI. But slower, worse handling, less engaging, and requires high octane where the GTI is fine on 87. But you get the quirks and features and party lighting.Detroit wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 3:25 pmI'm seriously going to consider one of these as a fun car. I do wish it was better for highway slogs, but that's not it's purpose.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 02, 2020 1:03 pm Exactly 1 year since I got the clown car.
10,240 miles driven
26.4mpg
0 - issues
Still love the car, no rugrats.
Main complaint... SMOL size leads to bumpy AF freeway ride, and other vehicles tend to bully me on the road. Other than that it is a driving experience with crackles, pops and great brakes and handling. 5/7 would recommend.

I want my R56 back. 17s with the standard suspension was great, IMO, for slaying highway miles.[user not found] wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 4:07 pm17s not 18s.
The F-series MINIs are more like baby BMWs than any generation prior. That means a bit more reliable. It also means a bit less quirky.
I’ve logged more miles than anyone on here, save for Apex, in MINIs. They’re great highway cars. Plenty of room for long legs in the front seats, good sight lines, great fuel economy, and if you don’t get the big the ride is fine.
I love the character of the 500 Abarf but fuck do I hate the seating position.
I never had any issue doing long drives with any of my MINIs, including approximately 2200 miles over 4 days.

I've always loved the R56. Are they rather problematic? They're pretty cheap, especially just S models.Apex wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 4:22 pmI want my R56 back. 17s with the standard suspension was great, IMO, for slaying highway miles.[user not found] wrote: ↑Sun Sep 06, 2020 4:07 pm

The later models should be "ok" but they had timing chain issues... carbon issues, cooling issues etc. Most of which are fixable... but the F gen is far more reliable at least for now.
Zillmoney has more info on this, but the LCI update was beneficial to the models.

Sample size of one, but my friend has had a 2011 with like 170K miles since new and it has been pretty much trouble free. It's not a Prius in reliability but certainly adequate.

If you go R56, you want a ‘11-‘13 S or ‘13 JCW as those had the updated N18 motor.
You’ll run into some old car shit, but stuff like the engine bay is tiny to work in. Just food for thought.
I’d buy another one.

I think the f series is a bit different. which one is better to service. Haven’t had to do anything major yet outside of air filter, cabin air.

Noted.
I'd probably look for an 11-13 S with small wheels for maximum road comfort.
