This whole offroad search is the most classic case of champagne tastes on a beer budget... just get an old vehicle a la FJ - it won't depreciate and will be cool and still pretty reliable I'm sure... or grab up a brand new low end Wrangler. That two door you suggested for me for $25k will be worth $25K in four years, so :whynot: just ? (same could be said for a nice FJ).

Why do I have to ? This vehicle is something that I don’t necessarily want to be new because it may got some abuse, be parked out side etc.D Griff wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 7:57 amtoo... the man could clearly go on a loaded out Rubicon or more if desired... but :scrogge: gonnaDesertbreh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 12:19 am

You don't... but you also seem to want a nice/cool/interesting/great condition vehicle... cheap vehicles are going to be, well, cheap vehicles. There's a reason nice, used 4X4s are pricey, people want them. No one wants a 10 year old Malipoo by comparison, so they're cheap as hell.

That’s ok. Then the question becomes whether or not I need to re/adjust. I don’t think 12-18k is cheap after all I am looking at vehicles up to 13 years old. The newer FJs just get too close to new Jeep pricingD Griff wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 11:28 amYou don't... but you also seem to want a nice/cool/interesting/great condition vehicle... cheap vehicles are going to be, well, cheap vehicles. Do it. I kind of wish I needed it I'd have you go get it for me..............I think RR's are stupid as a rule but for that price and mileage and ownership I would try it out. They are incredibly nice when they run.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 3:25 pm1 family owner ... thing looks mint.. how bad can it possibly be ? Shocks all around are 1k . It would be almost 1/3 of the price of a fj with the same miles and condition after taxDesertbreh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 3:32 pmDo it. Also, Lesbereal. You have issues. You won't have it long enough to get really fooked.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 3:40 pmIt would be almost 1/3 of the price of a fj with the same miles and condition after taxDesertbreh wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 3:32 pm

You can buy these military surplus for like $5k.
Might need some work with the DMV but it’s doable.
Edit: my apologies, I forgot you were Canadian.
Please accept this bottle of Molson and maple syrup as pittance.

Trans service on these things is a bitch... Lifetime "fluid" so exhaust and maybe engine has to get moved/come out in order to get the pan done...
Other than that they seem ok... Some suspension popping due to sway bar end links (20 min job)
No other major issues I could find... some have timing chain issues, but they seem be somewhat random and with higher miles. And one should be able to "hear it" during the test drive/start up

I toyed with this idea. Most of them are the 6.7 N'A which doesn't reach freeway speeds. 55mph top speed. They are "fun on paper" but terrible in real life, especially military spec.
Parts like tires etc are VERY expensive and can be hard to come by... And the 5k ones are a pipe dream, most 5k units need 10k in work... sorted ones are around 25k in military spec... I am looking for something that is comfortable as well... so this doesn't fit the bill at all.

SO yea nothing new here on the RR. If shit breaks (and it will) it will cost a lot... No idea how common it is because the average RR owner dealer services and the 2/3rd owner drives it off a cliff.
There is anus puckering when it comes to these, because you're rolling dice. Taking it on a trail+going far away is likely a pretty futile proposition which sort of negates my wants/needs for the car. But it would make for an epic daily... gas mileage be damned.

So i know this is far more money than the RR. But I am anticipating 0 headaches on this thing... It would also be about 5-8k cheaper than a wrangler... with a similar depreciation schedule and (more space) inside since i am considering 2 door

They are super cool vehicles, but I didn't really put a thought into 5k tires but figured maintenance would be all DIY and special order. The hidden costs make it a for me too Bob.max225 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 4:54 pmI toyed with this idea. Most of them are the 6.7 N'A which doesn't reach freeway speeds. 55mph top speed.
