So I recently found some photos I shot back in the day of my Beetle build. Mind you, these were shot on a point-and-shoot 35mm Mamiya camera around 33 years ago as best as I can recall. They've been slowly fading away in an envelop in the back of my closet, so I discovered a couple weeks ago. I laid them out on the floor and took pics of them with my phone. I tried to enhance them somewhat in my phone but there was really not much I could do. As such, the picture quality is :gag: . However, the subject matter is pretty cool. Beetle builds are fun and easy and the :lolol: to be had driving a :fullretard: Bug are legit.

Max asked me for these pics during some convo last year and :dubshow: and Herr Zilch encouraged me to make a thread so blame them for the inevitable lameness to follow.

*WARNING* Random WAP sightings may be included. Maybe.

First, a list of what all I did, as best as I can remember.

Car - 1970 Beetle.

Engine:
Big bore cylinders
Pistons
Dual Port heads
Holley 270 cfm 2bbl carb
Paper air cleaner to replace the OEM liquid air cleaner
Cool looking air cleaner cover
Hi Perf clutch
Aluminum Power Pulley
New Distributer
Monza Quad exhaust
Oil cooler
New cooling tin
Bosch high voltage ignition coil
New heat exchangers
New oil pump (I think, can't remember for sure)
Maybe a new fuel pump, iirc.

Suspension:
KYB Gas-a-just shocks
Front and rear Sway Bars
New front transverse leaf springs and subframe
:ramz:
Pirelli P3's - 175/70 14's front and 195/70's back

Random:
Euro Tail light lenses (on long term loan from a buddy who had a Bug imported from Germany)
Wired a 6 volt fan from my Uncle's old De Soto that he kept for some reason into the defrost vents at the base of the windshield and wired to the rear window defogger since that long since stopped working. Since the fan was 6 volts I had to get a resister to step the voltage down from 12v. That sucker got HOT so I had the idea of enclosing it into the duct work to get some extra heat onto the windshield in the winter. It sort of worked a bit, which was an improvement!

That's all I can remember.

That yellow rag (color coordinated with the car, brah) was used to wipe the frost off the INSIDE of the windshield! That's why I tried my De Soto fan fix.

Me too. I kept my steering wheel badge. It's in a drawer somewhere in my house. I also kept the big VW logo from the frunk.

Ok, here's me posing with my goodies after my first shopping trip at my VW speed shop. I spent $700 that day, iirc. You can see a head, a cylinder, distributor, power pulley,, oil cooler kit, and a piece of cooling tin on my face lol. Always mindful of my anonymity.

No such thing as shopping on line back then, or researching shit on the interwebs. I used things called "books" that had text and pictures to show you how to do things. :mindblown:

Me and a buddy just dropped the engine. To remove a Bug engine, after disconnecting fuel line, electric shit and battery, you jack up the ass end really high (you can see a wooden 4x4 on the jack for extra lift), unbolt the engine from the trans, then get the jack under the engine and roll it back and lower it until you roll it out from under the rear bumper. There are no engine mounts. It just hangs off the trans bell housing with 4 bolts.

Dat's me on the right.ImageImage

Very cool, I have entrained the idea of building a beetle for fun as well. It is about as “simple” as a “modern
“ car can get.

Barely modern but yeah. It's really easy to pull a Type 1 engine.

Ah yes the notorious 4 bolts and engine is out.

Is it possible to make a beetle keep up with modern traffic (75mph) freeway ? I.e is there like a 1.8/2.0 motor making around 70-80hp? The 1.6 in stock 50hp form is a tough cookie to swallow

Engine on the stand, which was bolted to an old dresser in the basement. Yep, the entire engine was light enough for my buddy and me to wrestle it down into my basement.

Engine before I cleaned it.Image
