Oh I know. Nothing but  from and for our :melon:

It really was a fun, educational experience. I DD'd it for over a year after finishing the build then sold it to a buddy who drove it for a few more years, which made me rather proud. Also got tons of looks and comments.

And that exhaust sounded so :jimp: !

God I still remember how my Bug smelled inside. All those old vinyl, gas, and oil smells. Such nostalgia...

I would love to find a good condition 1969-1971 Karmann Ghia and do this again to it. :megusta:

Exactly. But it's pretty rewarding in it's own right because these things are stupid fun when they have a little more :balls:

The Ghia seems cool as hell and actually affordable, though I'm not sure that I would actually want to drive one without substantial MODZZZ. Do they even have rack and pinion steering? IIRC the Beetle got it eventually so perhaps it's possible to add it to a Ghia.

Affordable if you can find one in decent shape. They are really cool looking and while they didn't really perform any better than a Beetle they had to have a lower center of gravity so I'd imagine they'd handle better, especially with mods. And I'm guessing your'd want a coupe over a convertible, as would I. :notsure: when they got rack and pinion steering but I believe you can retro fit a R&P rack from other VW products or even from a 356 or early 911 maybe. But the stock steering is nice, very communicating and direct. And pretty light for a :manuel: system since there's very little weight over the front tars. Kind of on the slow side :doe: but a smaller wheel should help that. I thought about getting a small steering wheel for mine but never got around to it.

Looks like $10-15k for a nice coupe now, beats the hell out of most other classics.

I've no idea how that compares to Beetle prices :doe:

Damn that's pretty but all the work has already been done. I'd like to find a stock one and build it myself. It's gotta be cheaper and more rewarding to do it that way. 1971 is a good year, too because it has true IRS and dual port heads and it's before emission shit started to strangle them.

I think that a Ghia could be fun if set up to imitate an old rally car, complete with a pretty good suspension+tire setup. They certainly look the part and have the right building blocks in place by being a small+light RR platform.

Indeed. And they're pretty robust, too, at least I used to slam into Chicago potholes nfg and nothing ever broke, even on my old, rusty car. Dat Nazi over engineering.

It's not the same car at all, but the Ghia appeals to me as an attainable-in-the-USA version of the old Alpine Renault A110.

Also a tiny ~1500 lb RR car with simple 4-cyl power and Italian 50s/60s fastback coupe styling.

tall order on that. They either total ground up projects or fully restored or something in between and still over priced.
