Well, time for some
I don't have any car friends IRL. Zero. So I'm on my own for enjoyment, which is tough when the wife is so against it. But to make matters worse, I never drive anywhere by myself. No reason to, and when I do, it'll just be 3 hours on the highway. I'm not going on pleasure cruises on my own, the roads aren't THAT twisty, and frankly it's a waste. The nearest track is 2 hours away, which isn't bad, and a good excuse, but not enough on its own to buy a car for it.
My dad brought the Vagon up to visit a few weeks back and had me drive so he could
at wineries. I was excited at first, but then paranoia set in about curbing wheels or scraping the lip on a parking block, or whatever car shit. Car's fast, handles great, but is by no means comfortable. The seats are great to sit in but suck to regularly get in and out of (like a day of wine tasting), and the ride is firm enough to be near jarring. Half way through the day, I wished we were in a Jeep.
That's when I realized I might be over it all. I'm legit sad to be losing the JT, but it's really a jack of all trades master of none. A Ram and a side by side for wheeling would probably be more fun and utilitarian than anything else. Or a 2 door Wrangler for top off cruising. Still have the JL too even though I find it a bit boring because White Sahara's are everywhere.
Man. I see where you're coming from, but I reach a totally different conclusion despite having similar circumstances.
Since the kiddos went back to daycare I've been driving the Atlas almost exclusively, ferrying them to and fro. It's a great SUV, handles way better than it has any right to for what it is, and is super relaxing, but...it's boring. I hadn't driven the GTI in over a week, then yesterday one of the twins was sent home because she started running a fever - we think it's just from teething - so I was able to pick up our other two in the GTI at the end of the day. It was SO refreshing to be back in a car with a
, with sharper responses and more direct feedback, even though the GTI is far from the sharpest razor across the sport compact realm.
I took the long way down a windy bit that leads up from town toward where we are, and it was SO nice. It's only a 40mph road and I never hit more than 55, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. This car has 100% made me realize that I don't need a car that traps 120+mph, I just need a car that feels right.
I'll have to sell this thing sooner or later, but
is 100% on board with getting a fun car eventually, it's just going to be one she enjoys too. We share finances, she gets at least some weight in the decision, so it is what it is. It'll probably have to be something like an M3 or a Porsche for her to get on board, but I'm totally okay with that. It'll still primarily be my car, she just wants to enjoy looking at it and riding in it. Maybe you could get her to go along with a different kind of sports car?
