I concur that the halogens in the GTI are pretty damn good. I have (had) no complaints with mine. But wifey's H LED's were eye opening.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:01 pmI don't have the headlight boner of most here, but even my halogens were pretty damn good, way better than BMW halogens.
Given your use case, GTI makes the most sense probably.
IMO Civic Si is a better driving/handling car, but only.
Veloster N is neat and DCT is coming... would you be down with the styling? Seems like you prefer more conservative.
WRX is but a no-go with the automatic.
I know you said no used luxo but a Beemah like mine is like $20K in brand new condish and is kind of just a RWD GTI that looks better and has a better blue color.
Acura ILX might be worth a look, I think they have a DCT and the dynamics of a Civic Si.
does it need to be four door with no kids/no ?

As for 4 doors, I do drive people around fairly regularly, and older folks especially, between my inlaws, my mom, etc.

Either way, skip the Aztrak version.wap wrote:I don't want AWD, but I DON'T want the 1.4troyguitar wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:00 pm Screw the Pontiac Alltrack, get the GSW S 4mo if you want AWD.
max225 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 6:53 pm Are there major MPG/maintenance considerations ? If so a 340i will present an excellent value for not much extra.
Amazing examples can be had for 25k or so. IMO there is no better value on the used market than that... but it comes at a price of premium 23mpg and BMW rape fees for repairs.
The "rape fees" aren't a thing if you can do some basic ass wrench turning. I have yet to ever visit a Beemah and have put on 16k non issue miles with like $100 in maintenance.

GTI is probably it if you want a new car. IMO it is a hell of a lot better vehicle than an AllTrac (not hideous, quicker, cooler/better seats, LSD, etc).
But I do think a 335/340i would be rad, they are pretty darn reliable up to 120K I think, you only did 72k in a decade.
MB AMG GLA 45 seems cool? Kinda a CUV but really more like a but cooler.

I’d actually check out a Mini Cooper S if I were WAP and willing to look outside of VW umbrella. They really are quite a bit of fun to drive.
Can’t go wrong with a MK7.5 GTI.
Elantra GT turbo or whatever it is. Or Kia Forte has one now too. They have a dual clutch. Lobster turbo non N is same just a hatch instead of being a sedan.
Used Benzo GLA maybe the AMG one. That would be hella fun. They had a DCT.
The non CUV hatch is the hard part here. There aren’t a ton of models to pick from.

Is a Kia Stinger too big? They’re a hatch and cool as f. Fast too.wap wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:07 pmAnd I agree the Lobster is , it's just not for me.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:01 pm

I've thought about a GLA. I like them, but they're rather spendy.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:18 pm

After driving Gbergs I would personally opt for the R over the GTI. Just personal preference but it could really put the power down.Big Brain Bradley wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:51 pm rip. good car did its job and kept you safe.
buy a good used mk6 cash
live a little and get used 7.5R
or just get new/used 7 GTI for epic

Yeah been a minute since I’ve looked into them. Stelvios are cheap. Both of those are in the CUV but really more of a hatch category.wap wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:31 pmI've thought about a GLA. I like them, but they're rather spendy.D Griff wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:18 pm

I've tried to get excited about a Mini, but I've failed. I respect them, and recognize their attributes, but just not for me.Johnny_P wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:29 pm I’d actually check out a Mini Cooper S if I were WAP and willing to look outside of VW umbrella. If Kia still sold the forte 5, I'd be interested, but they're just 4 door sedans now, iirc.
See my GLA comment above.
Agree with last comment. This ain't Europe, unfortunately.

New or new-ish 4 door hatch options are pretty much Golf/GTI/GSW, Civic Sport, Elantra GT, and maybe the "big" Golf-sized MINI - Countryman or Clubman?

Yes absolutely. I like the 4 door mini but the chubman with the barn doors is basically same size as a GTI. They drive great even with the automatics.[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:36 pm Actually, a Clubman wouldn’t be a bad suggestion for
Similar size as the GTI, punchy engine, 8-speed auto, FWD or AWD.
Worth a look.

That would be a cool dad car. Hm.[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:40 pm
They’re comfy, quick, different, and fun. And it’s easier to find LED headlights and the better stereo than in the VWs.
Could find a JCW for relatively inexpensive price, too.

Tail lights always annoyed me on these. Wonder if there’s a workaround hack.[user not found] wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:47 pmFind one with roof rails and throw the bike up top.
I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a newer F-series MINI.

Pretty much. And that's why I keep coming back to another GTI. It's really the best of that bunch.troyguitar wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 10:37 pm New or new-ish 4 door hatch options are pretty much Golf/GTI/GSW, Civic Sport, Elantra GT, and maybe the "big" Golf-sized MINI - Countryman or Clubman?

I'd try to test drive the Elantra GT for and see what kind of pricing is available, but probably end up with a base DSG GTI out of those options.

I kinda want to do the same. Gotta find out how is handling test drives during the apocalypse first.
